Seems like there's an unusual degree of consensus on this forum that there are three major areas where the team could do with upgrades:
- Attacker (some would say centre forward but more would say right winger this year in view of Cavani's extension)
- Defensive midfielder (with Carrick's passing range + Fred's "dog chasing squirrel" energy)
- Central defender (fast, robust and technically gifted, to play alongside Maguire)
It would be fantastic to get Sancho, Varane and a DM of similar quality (not quite sure who my favourite candidate is). But if the budget isn't there, what do we prioritise? If we can only get one of them, which position and player is top target? What if we can afford two marquee signings? And if we have to save money, are there any bargain players out there or youth team promotions that we could consider?

Getting good players is important, but I don't think it's as important as, fitness, tactics and formation, and most important, the right mentality.
Unless you've got rag, tag and bobtail to choose from, and then player upgrade is a must.

Buying backup players hasn’t really worked for us, Romero is probably the only one that worked out recently. It is always better to to buy establish players that can challenge first team or buy young players who have potential to become as good as first teamers, rather than buying backup players.
In any case, We are stuck with whole host of mediocre CBs atm, it’s the one position we need to buy some proper quality, and ship out some of the deadwood

I think the priority is a RW, Would have been CF had Cavani not extended. I would imagine Mason would get a lot of time at CF next and as RR said only a step away from having to rely on Dan James, no harm to him.
Next if we got a top class CB I reckon we coulddrop one of our holding CDM for big games and have Pogba and Bruno as two advanced midfielders
Seems like Declan Rice is on the radar for DM. Not entirely convinced about him to be honest and reckon that would be a our budget on the first 2 players. Reckon Garner gets a little bit of a shot next year. Had a successful loan at forest and he could add something a bit different to the squad
Back up right back is another area that needs addressed. Williams looks uncomfortable on the right (despite being right footed). Reckon Ole might look to promote Ethan Laird here
