Probably in an attempt to downplay looming failure and wheedle his way into another tourn as England manager after this one?
No excuses for me, its a very talented squad, with a boat load of experience considering most of it has been playing in european finals and such over the last few years and no doubt a fair amount of it part of the England youth teams winning world cups etc. Looking around at the competition too theres not too many countries match us on amount of talent atm.

No, and it could cause the tournament to be pretty shiiiiit - the format has probably done that if the last Euros is anything to go by.
But I think we’ve got bigger issues than the likes of France and Portugal. And our preparation will be hindered by these finals this week.
This tournament really could end up being won by just the fittest team, rather than the best.

He is right this squad is not at its peak.
He is wrong however, if this means we should not have expectations and accept mediocrity.
Semi-Finals should be a minimum requirement imo.

But what is he downplaying? He’s said their aim is to win the competition. Explaining why he’s gone with 33 players, and commenting on the level and condition of the squad, isn’t getting excuses in early.
Getting excuses in early would be to point out that there’s a good chance we’ll play Portugal or France in the second round, and so it’ll be tough to get past the last 16.
And it’s actually a pretty good excuse, they’re probably the two best teams in the tournament.

Seriously Ben White is a really good CB and offers flex as he can operate in the holding midfield role too.
