Little Ole's Big Adventure

Two and a half years ago little Ole was drafted in from Molde to pick up the pieces left behind by big but past it Mourinho. He was given the mission of managing the massive club Manchester United. No one could envisage what would come from this unexpected appointment, with him developing a cult following amongst some fans, and frequent criticism from others.

Last night he had the chance to show everyone he could win a trophy. Last night he had the chance to show he is a winner. Last night he had the chance to show that his in-game management had improved. Last night he failed, and worse than that, looked out of his depth. And in doing so disappointed those that still believe in him, though they may not admit it.

Many will want Ole to continue. But in absolutely no way, shape or form can anyone call him a top manager. Nor someone who will magically become a top manager if he just managers for a little while longer. It doesn't work like that. He's a second rate manager, this is clear, end of.

Next season when Man City will be favourites again, when Liverpool get their defenders back, when Chelsea start the season with a better manager, when Leicester who narrowly missed out on top 4 improve their squad with competence, how will United fare? Could it be that Liverpool and Chelsea leapfrog United, leaving them competing for 4th with Leicester? Maybe. Surely he's taken us as far as he can!

Never will Ole have a better chance to win a trophy than against Villareal. In the domestic cups, you have to get past teams like City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Leicester, all of which he has failed to do. You have to outsmart top managers, there's no other way. Surely he's taken us as far as he can!

With better teams who have better players, better managers, better chances of silverware, will we be attracting the top players this summer? Surely he's taken us as far as he can!

Is it now time to bring Ole's big adventure to an end? Ideally, yes. The only way we're competing next season is with a better manager. The only way we're playing an entertaining style next season is with a better manager. However, I am fully aware that barring something unexpected, he'll be manager next season. But no way should he be getting a contract extension.

We all wanted Ole to succeed. Not only would we have one of our own in charge, but it would simply have been easier as we wouldn't need to search again for a top manager. But this hasn't materialised. His days are numbered. It's a question of when, not if. Big moments produce big managers. The search for that manager continues.

Great post and hard to argue against it, the glaring weakness at Utd is the manager and that will hold you back until rectified.

......

Is he holding us back? I am not a fan of Ole myself but I think he had done pretty well with the squad as it is now. He has made the CL twice on the bounce for the first time since SAF left.

Personally I don’t think he is the man to lead us forward. But I do think he is the man to do the squad rebuild. We will see by the middle of next season of tile is so.

That's all well and good, but a new manager will come with their own philosophy and preferred players. How much of this will clash with what Ole has built?

How come all these clubs with better managers keep finishing below us?

Because they have an inferior squad. Next question.

That's the bit I don't understand how people overlook. United have comfortably the second best squad in the prem.

It seems to be accepted on here that we have the 3rd best squad behind City and Lfc. Those who believe in Ole have their agenda of course.

Ah, so when we win, it's because of the players. When we lose, it's because of the manager.

Got you.

Who knows. Maybe we will hire someone who has the same squad beliefs. I am not going to beat myself up over it.

The self awareness of these people is quite staggering. According to the likes of Nohlman and Indian nearly all our players are $hit and wouldn’t get in a top team and the manager is useless.

Yet here we are second in the table behind a very good Cith team and above a still good Liverpool team.

Either our payers are not $hit or Ole is a managerial genius.

Hmm... I sometimes think that we've got just quite a good team and quite a good manager, who's done very good things making the club Manchester United again, quite good things getting us playing the proper way, and less good things getting his first trophy, which will probably cost him. Sometimes they get it wrong between them and it's horrible, sometimes they click and it's great. I'm probably not extreme enough to fit in here.

I’ll support Ole as long as he’s manager of the club. More support isn’t conditional to us being successful. That doesn’t mean I agree with everything he does and he made quite a few mistakes last night which ultimately cost us the game.

You can support a team and still be frustrated and not agree with everything.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
People like you support the manager rather than support the well being of the club
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not what I said at all. Even if I believed he wasn’t up to the job, I’d still give my support as that is what supporting a team is about.

Through thick and thin. The club needs to hold its standards high, but that doesn’t mean the fans should be giving dogs abuse to players and managers every week.
