For some reason, this hurts way less than Lyon last season. I saw a comment from some opposition fan saying this defeat will affect us mentally. The same was said last season. If anything I think this defeat will build character into this group of players.
So much emphasis on Pep and his decisions but anyone who knows anything about football knows that Players win Finals, not managers. To say our players froze is an understatement. I could hardly recognize half of them. Other than Bernardo and Walker they all froze on the big stage, even Dias. Not saying he played badly, he just went into his shell.
Yes Chelsea maintained a nice shape that left no space at all for our players inbetween the lines but our players simply had to adapt not get sucked in. At the start of the match I said big night for KDB as captain and he unfortunately failed to adapt to the situation. The Chelsea players knew their roles and once they scored that goal it was game over. The diving, the rolling especially Chillwell, Jorginho, Azpi and time wasting by Mendy. Tuchel read the script perfectly and our players obliged.
The goal we conceded was annoying but could have been worse because if Havertz had decidede to dive like his other team mates Ederson would have been off in my opinion. What I also found annoying, is we knew how Chelsea would play. Pep knew. The players knew but we did not come up with solutions. A chelsea fan on the match thread said they could be 4-0 up and I found that weird given that Chelsea under Tuchel have only ever scored more than 2 goals once. They normally win by 1 goal or 2-1. We just needed cool heads.
Cool heads FFS. The cool heads we saw in Paris were simply not there in Portugal. PSG are the best side we have met this season be it in europe or domestically. They marmalized us in that first half in Paris but we somehow had the character to score 2 lucky goals and see the game out. For me thats a take away from this seasons journey in europe.We made it past the quarters, we made it past the semi's. Thats another takeaway from this seasons journey in europe.
I thought Jesus was good when he came on. Its a pity his decision-making in the final 3rd is all over the place, like Werner or Sterling otherwise there is a quality player in there. The less said about Sterling the better but its not his fault.
We will eventually win this competition. We are in a golden period where the 2 biggest club sides in world football (Madrid and Barca) are not anywhere close to posing a threat. Add the chaos at Juve it means we will start the competition as favourites again next season. Thats the tag we have to bear.
To give context Sir Alex won it in his 13th year of managing united, went on to win it again 10 years later. Just 2 in 26 years where he won 13 domestic titles.One of the wins awas a penalty shoot out and the other united scored 2 goals in the dying moments of the final.
Maybe I am understating this defeat but given the state that Barca, Madrid and Juve are in, I am willing to bet we will be in next seasons Final.
