Taking a 3rd choice LB is smart in a 26 man squad compared to taking a 7th choice attacking midfielder - which is all Lingard would have been

TAA-------Hendo-----Rice------Shaw/Chilwell
Sancho---Kane---Sterling

This squad pleases no one, achieves absolutely nothing. I cannot see what Southgate is going for other than picking the most politically correct squad possible. There is what can only be described as an abundance of wide players, who will only serve to provide predictable attacks. There should have been a clear centre-back to back up Maguire and Stones, the half dozen full backs are useless. There should have been another creative player in centre midfield and another recognised goal scorer.

Based on this logic though too few CBs and CMs have been picked

Everybody is creaming their pants because we have a few decent right backs and a couple of young attacking midfielders with a lot of talent. Apart from that, we have very little, a group over over-hyped over-rated players. The squad is unbalanced, where's the depth of cover in central defence or midfield where we are taking injured players?
