Donny is injured and now confirmed to be missing the Euros.
Usually there would be a selfish club-centred silver lining about a player being able to rest over the summer and come back fresh for the new season. In this case, I reckon it's bad news for United. Donny is hardly going to be suffering from burn-out from the last season. More importantly, the Euros represented a chance for him to factory reset himself as a footballer: playing in a familiar collective, where he has shone in the past, and hopefully rediscovering for himself and reminding the world of the qualities that made him look like a reasonably credible acquisition last summer, even to those who thought we should have had other priorities. It might have even put him in the shop window if all sides conclude the United transfer wasn't a good fit. And if nothing else, it would have been nice to see him actually looking happy on a football pitch for a few minutes.

He’d have been fresh anyway, his season was basically only just starting

Poor kid. Joins for mega money, sits on the bench having to watch Fred stink the place out in his position then, just before he is about to actually get some games, he's injured!

Don't think Fred and him play the same role in our team

That’s the annoying thing.
He’s not really best suited to Bruno’s role either.
Someone dropped the ball with this signing as he doesn’t have a place in our managers favoured formation/system.

Regardless of burn-out, or non burn-out, don't want MUFC players anywhere near such a ridiculous and outdated construct as a 'national' team.
Glad he's not playing (although not for the reason he's not), but it would be better if the club included non- involvement with such activity in the contracts of ALL the squad.

Terrible squad management by Ole. It's either burn out or rust out.

DVDB has performed admirably pre-United, and on bigger stages than his United career has afforded him to date. He has played well for the Netherlands, and very well in the business end of the CL for Ajax, in a run that saw them knocking out Real Madrid and Juventus and only missing out on the final on away goals. He scored in the quarter and semi-finals.
He's obviously had a very disappointing first season at United and may prove to simply be a bad fit at our club, but before we sneer at him we should reflect that he has bigger achievements on his footballing CV than any United player bar Pogba.
