Jordan Henderson

Is he becoming a liability/problem/pain in the ar5e to the England squad?

First he pulls rank on DCL to take and then miss a penalty against Romania. Then he declares himself fit to face Croatia despite only playing 45 minutes of non-competitive football since February.

He seems like he’s in it for himself. From being underrated I think his importance to the England squad is now overrated and he’s at risk of putting noses out of joint and unbalancing the team. I don’t think he should be captain (should be Kane) and arguably he - along with Maguire - shouldn’t even be in the squad.

Term approving of professional athletes stealing disabled parking. Next he’ll be telling paraplegics that they are fit for work: ‘theres a farm that needs a scarecrow’...

Yes, because, as I have explained above, modern day training regularly includes conditioned games to make sure that players get up to match fitness and stay match fit if necessary. I understand that "it's not the same as an actual game", but that's the point in conditioned training, to replicate that.

It's also now not just as simple as, you gain match fitness by playing in a game that we see, be it a competitive game, friendly etc.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Who would he be playing with in these 'conditioning games'? It can't be first teamers who have had a hectic schedule this season, and need the rest.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Exatly what I was thinking. I doubt very much that the England squad have been doing any high intensity training. It'll have been more about tactics, formations, set pieces and just ticking over on the fitness.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Every players' training is different, maybe they have been putting in the extra hours with Henderson to ensure he is match fit by the time the tournament comes around.

It doesn't have to be first teamers he's playing against, it can be anyone. He could be playing against the U18's for all it matters, it's just a conditioned game working at a set intensity to build up players' match fitness as well as work on fine tuning other parts of the game.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't think he'd get the same intensity with u18s. Nor do I think that he will be switching between the bubbles to do so.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I didn't mean literally the U18's, I was just using that as an example. But players do not get the same intensity out of friendly games as they do competitive fixtures, yet clubs still play friendlies in pre-season, often against minnows that they have affiliations with. You don't get the same intensity out of that as you would a better quality opponent, but it will still be beneficial towards match fitness in some capacity.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course it will give you some benefit and its obviously a steady build up to the start of the season. But friendlies in pre-season aren't as very intense and everyone is in the same boat in that they are unfit.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah that is true but it all builds up to what one considers to be "match fit" though. At the end of the day, it's all subjective.
