Fonseca Situation - A Balanced View

Let me start by saying Fonseca gets my support, same as any spurs manager that is appointed and I will judge him on performances and results, pure and simple. However, as I’ve said on other articles, it’s possible to offer an individual your support while also being constructively critical of his appointment and the regime behind it.

I’ve seen people on here defending Levy and ENIC, but let’s just remind ourselves:

1. They had a manager that finished runners up in the PL, but failed to back him for 18 months.
2. Despite not being backed, said manager took us to top 4 and CL runners up, but was sacked when the lack of investment lead to his team running out of fitness and form.
3. They replaced him with a hasbeen quick fix that everyone knew would be a bad fit.
4. They attempted to use taxpayer money to furlough ordinary staff, despite spending millions on player transfers, wages and director dividends.
5. They attempted to sell the English football pyramid down the river for a handful of silver via the ESL. While all the other items on this list could be described as disappointing or embarrassing, this one is outright disgraceful and shameful.
6. Levys apology for this was the most mealy mouthed, disingenuous, veiled insult to fans imaginable.
7. They charged fans £60 a ticket for row Z seats in the first game back vs Villa, sticking them in the gods to hide the bad feedback they were expecting.
8. They sacked Mourinho 6 days before a final to avoid paying him a bonus on the off chance he’d win. While I agreed with the sacking, the reasons behind it tell you all you need to know about their money over trophies approach.

Then there is the appointment of Fonseca. Putting aside the cynical and transparent public flirtations with Poch/Conte in ST renewal week, this is an appointment that smacks of desperation, convenience and economizing. Yes, it’s likely to be Paratici’s choice and we all wanted a DoF to make the decisions. But clearly his decisions will be made within the parameters Levy sets him, and in this instance you’d gather they were; someone that can work on a budget, someone grateful for the opportunity who won’t make too many demands (a yes man), and someone who is a free agent. Put it this way, had Fonseca still been employed by Roma does anyone think we’d have wanted him so much we’d have bought him out of his contract? Of course not.

They deserve every bit of criticism, protest and bad press coming their way. Moving on to Fonseca himself - because regardless of the motivation behind his appointment we have to appraise him objectively, it’s not his fault Levy is a completecunt and he’d be a fool to turn this opportunity down. So let’s start with the negatives so we can finish on a positive.

He’s a journeyman, not an up & comer, 11 jobs in 15 years and only minor successes tells you this. His teams are defensively poor. He has a poor record against the big teams. He was sacked from his two highest profile jobs (Porto, Roma). Despite his availability, no top club in Italy were interested. He regressed Porto from back to back title winners when he took over, to a top 4 side, and took over a Roma that had finished 3rd and lead them to 5th then 7th.

However, he did well with Pacos, taking them from relegation to the UCL, he did good with Braga and did exceptionally well with Shakhtar, winning three doubles and getting them to the UCL last 16, with a 72% win percentage, so he has some euro pedigree and experiencing of winning silverware. He is popular with players, and plays fast, attacking football. He was apparently unlucky with Roma last season, having good XG stats and a squad decimated by injury and overall only lost 27 of 102 games with them, getting to a Europa semi.

My opinion? History suggests he’s struggled in the bigger leagues, hasn’t stayed in jobs long and is a pretty average coach. I wish him well, I support him 100%, but I would be very surprised to see him be a success at Spurs - and by that I mean getting top 4 and winning a domestic cup which must surely be a reasonable metric of success for us.

I can't blame a manager who was forced to have Chris Smalling as their starting CB

Fab-Seca or Fraud-Seca. Which one is it gonna be?

Some of you wanted and a DoF. We got one.

If Fonseca is his choice. We ride or die with him. He must be either a brave man to want to work indirectly for Levy or just very lucky to manage our club.

Can't make my mind up but I wish Levy would announce something soon either with or without him.

He also must not mind being our 5th choice.

I guess we'll have to give him a try and hope he isn't just another Marco Silva, who looks and speaks the part but is completely average.

5th choice. After not renewing his contract with Roma he must have a point to prove. I've seen an interview with him saying it would be a dream to manage a club in the prem. Well to dream is to dare and all that.

Come the first match day thread the mood will be interesting to gauge. I really hope we see lots of changes in the squad before then. Tweet something Levy you mug.

The Fonz. Wait a sec there was a character on there called Chachi and we got Paratici. John Samos has volunteered to play Chachi in a Happy Day reunion.

John Samos looks like our Fonz. Weird AF :
