Southgate's nadir?

He's gone for his tried and trusted. Trippier, Sterling and two defensive DM's and matches up with the Germans with a back 3.

If it works, fair do's, he made a big call and it worked in a massive game. He made decent subs and finally beat the Germans in a tournament. a feat not achieved in decades.

Get it wrong and we lose the press will turn. He will have ignored our best young attacking and creative players and he will rightly be criticised.

For a myriad of reasons I fear the former. Not the team I expected. If he has to switch to a 4-2-3-1, because we are struggling, I for one will be pi$$ed off. Kroos given space and not much to do, up against Rice and Phillips, is something I don't like. Mount or Grealish as AM will give the German midfield a lot more to do. Southgate will be asking the wide forwards to press and work. Saka and Sterling can do this, but Kroos gets more of an opportunity to dictate the game.

This is your defining game Gareth. Has He got it right?
