England: destroying three unwanted records

Three negative records we've destroyed this tournament:
i) not winning the first of our Euros group games;
ii) not winning a Euros knockout game in 90 minutes
iii) not beating Germany in a tournament at home since 1966....

I was shocked about numbers (i) and (ii). In 15 tournaments, we've only qualified for 9, and with the exception of Euro 96 (and arguably '68 when the format was very different), we've been awful until this one.

Say what you like about Southgate, but it's clear he's got a plan: play unattractive, utilitarian football which grinds out low-scoring wins with clean sheets. What's that now, 6 clean sheets in a row, 4 of which in competitive games?

Who have we beaten:
Our old enemy, and a recent World Cup Winner
Last World Cup's beaten finalists
And the other teams we've won or drawn against are hardly poor, either.

We've now got as many wins in this tournament as we managed in Euro 96.

Our next game will be a test as it is away from home, but either possible opponent is hardly unbeatable. Win that game and we're back on home turf for the Semi final and final.

iii) Euro 2000... Alan Shearer says hi.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Good point, well made. I swear BBC commentary made my original point. I have since revised my claim down to something hopefully more factual, but less surprising.

Alan Shearer kicked my a$$ with facts.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I thought you said at home? That was in Charleroi.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes. Alan Shearer asked Mr Mackaroni to relay a message that he had dispatched Germany back in 2000; my original claim- erroneously- was that England had not beaten Germany in tournament football since 1966.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I see.

I think the “beating Germany” stat was about England beating them in the knockouts for the first time since 1966, we lost to them in 1970, 1990, 1996 and 2010 all in the quarters/semi’s/last 16 etc.

We’ve only had one tournament since the ‘66 World Cup so from an “interesting stat” point of view, it’s not that remarkable that we haven’t beaten them in a home tournament since today.
