2018

I first posted this way back in 2018, think it is worth reposting Some might disagree)!

For those of you not old enough to remember him, Danny Blanchflower was not only the greatest Spurs captain, he was also one of the best ever players to wear the famous white shirt. A class footballer with a great wit and very articulate.

The quotes below are Blanchflower to a tee, and still ring as true now as they did nearly 60 years ago

15. “Ideas are very funny things. They never work unless you do."

14. “Winning isn’t everything, but wanting to win is."

13. “Everything in our favour was against us."

12. Spurs Director: “The trouble with you is that you think you know all the answers."
Blanchflower: “Ah, God love you, you don’t even know the questions."

11. “If we don’t know what we’re going to do, how can the other side?"

10. “We aim to equalise before the other team score. We should get our retaliation in first."

9. Interviewer: “Well Danny, what is the secret to the Spurs winning every match so far this season?"

Danny: “Most probably because in each match we have scored more goals than our opponents."

8. “He is a self-made man who worships his creator."

7. “Football is a simple game made complicated by people who should know better."

6. Duchess of Kent (at 1961 FA Cup Final): “Why do the other team have their names on their tracksuits and yours’ don’t?"
Blanchflower: “Ah well, ma’am, you see we all know each other."

5. “Hoddle? No, it’s the bad players who are a luxury."

4. “Whether you’re a player, manager, trainer, director, supporter, reporter, kit man or tea lady, football possesses the power to make the week ahead sparkle with a sense of joyous well-being."

3. A young Nobby Stiles: “Blanchflower, you’re finished!"
Blanchflower: “Excuse me son, I haven’t read the programme yet. What’s your name?"

2. “We’ve got a good side here. We will win the double this season (a successful prediction in 1960)."

1. “The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It is nothing of the kind. The game is about glory, it is about doing things in style and with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom."

Number 3 is classic Danny.

I had met the great man a couple of times, and he used to live not to far away from me in Southgate. He was a very learned man.

6. Perhaps the one who nobbled Len Chalmers didn’t want to be identified 😉

Relative to No 1, he would have loved it when the club hired Mourinho 😉
