South American football

I haven’t seen a second of Copa America but I was just taking a glance at the Copa America stats, line up, scores etc. and I have to say while we are seeing a brilliant Euros it looks on paper at least like South American football is very poor at the minute.

Brazil and Argentina are in the final and I had a look at both of their semi final line ups.

Brazil’s line up contained fairly average PL players like Fred and Richarlison and PL flop Danilo to name but a few. Gabriel Jesus who hasn’t pulled up any trees in a while was suspended and Firmino who was very good but has been average for a while came of the bench.

Argentina had 5 players in the starting team I’d never heard of. I checked to see if they were up and coming youngsters but the majority of them were players well into their 20s playing at very mediocre clubs in Spain and Italy.

I looked a little deeper and Chile and Uruguay are still very reliant on lads in their mid 30s like Sanchez, Vidal, Suarez, Cavani, Godin etc.

There does not appear to be a great deal of South American youngsters coming through either.

No South American has won the World Cup in what will 20 years and they have had one finalist in that time. It’s hard to see that changing any time soon.

I can tell you the Copa America this year has been a complete non event. Flamengo games get significantly more support,
-------
No fans allowed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sigh...I’m talking about bars and restaurants etc. Football here is absolutely massive, every location has a game on all day every day, it literally never stops.

Flamengo play in the league against an average side and the bars are packed and streets full of fans, red + black t-shirts everywhere.

I’ve barely seen a Brazil kit and the bars are just as busy during a Brazil game as when is on.

The contrast between the national team + club level is enormous, and that’s because Brazil expect to win really. There’s no real challengers for them bar Messi
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Went to a Flamengo game in Rio, Robinho scored the only goal. Pretty scary atmosphere in the end I was in. Forget who they played now, maybe Internacional
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Just took a look and Robinho was playing for Santos, they beat Flamengo 1-0.

So bars are open but it’s played behind closed doors?

That makes no sense.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to Brasil. Their “lockdowns” here have been pretty non-existant in Rio, and there’s been maybe 2 weeks of a ‘true’ lockdown since maybe November time last year.

Some obscene rules have been put in place like beach sports aren’t allowed on weekends, but you can stay out and drink until 11pm. You could even stay out until 2am at the same time, so long as the bar didn’t have live music...

It’s been quite remarkable really
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s the same here in Australia. In Melbourne, they’ve cancelled the formula 1 Grand Prix which wasn’t scheduled to be held until November, despite hardly any cases (21 active as of today). However it’s been all over the news how packed out the restaurants and bars in the Italian neighbourhood were when Italy played their semi-final. Most pubs have opened bookings for the final. I went to a pub for the game against Croatia and it was absolutely packed.

Sounds as silly as Ireland. We still can’t have a pint or a meal indoors but went on the Luas today (Dublin’s tram) and it was packed with no one regulating it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Might as well ease everything and accept 100k cases a day

Tbf while I think it’s crazy there’s literally no alternative before the government runs out of money
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s the picking and choosing that annoys me. It’s ok to hop into a small carriage with 30 odd strangers but we forbid you from eating indoors in an establishment with your friends however you can bring them all to your house and do the same. Nonsense imo.

I havent seen the inside of a pub for 17 months now, madness

Some players do perform better at International level than what they do at club level to be fair. Paul Pogba with France would be your most obvious example so it's difficult to right players off outright based on their clubs but I take the case in point that a lot of players aren't at top clubs.

I haven't watched much of the Copa America but there are some decent players in South America but of course they don't get picked up on much by the English media.

No comparison. Most of Australia is currently able to operate as normal because it's keeping Covid out. Hence the huge entourage of F1 teams can't come in from outside.

*The F1 teams may have had a say in the decision too of course, not being keen on having to go through a strict quarantine process if they were allowed in.
