I wanted to get people's thoughts on the growth of club and fan media. I was thinking about this after reading last night that Rangers are charging media outlets £25k for access this season, which personally I think is a disgrace.
I've only really paid attention to how things have developed at Rangers but became aware Celtic also seem to be involved in this at Ange's presser when the first question came from a random guy who started the cheated never defeated mantra.
Rangers this pre season in particular have made a point about how the only interviews and footage will be from the club directly with an RTV subscription. I've no real issue with paying for RTV and think the coverage is excellent for the money. But I think it's dangerous and unhelpful to block out the mainstream media and if any supporters should be against this it's Rangers after the carnage of recent years. Having everything managed in house has a bit of a Pravda feel about it and is unhealthy.
On the flip side I think the rise of fan media is a good thing. The H&H group at Rangers are excellent and actually last year asked better and more relevant pre and post game questions and their content is generally very good. The risk though is it's always going to be controlled by the club in terms of who gets access, which will ultimately depend on behaviours. An example is the 4Lads blog who were granted access last year but walked away early on as they couldn't accept the conditions of their access.
All of this though is quite damning on the MSM and overall I have little sympathy. Sports journalism in this country has become driven by clickbait and in the main playing the OF against each other online. The standard of journalism is as poor as I can remember and in it's current form I struggle to see the value. Whilst I'm disappointed in Rangers for blocking them out there's also a part of me that wonders exactly what I will miss from people like Jackson or Keevins not being there.
Is this the way coverage is going and is it the phasing out of traditional media? If it is does that mean more control for clubs and less insight for fans in to the goings on at there clubs?
