Club/Fan Media

Good Morning.

I wanted to get people's thoughts on the growth of club and fan media. I was thinking about this after reading last night that Rangers are charging media outlets £25k for access this season, which personally I think is a disgrace.

I've only really paid attention to how things have developed at Rangers but became aware Celtic also seem to be involved in this at Ange's presser when the first question came from a random guy who started the cheated never defeated mantra.

Rangers this pre season in particular have made a point about how the only interviews and footage will be from the club directly with an RTV subscription. I've no real issue with paying for RTV and think the coverage is excellent for the money. But I think it's dangerous and unhelpful to block out the mainstream media and if any supporters should be against this it's Rangers after the carnage of recent years. Having everything managed in house has a bit of a Pravda feel about it and is unhealthy.

On the flip side I think the rise of fan media is a good thing. The H&H group at Rangers are excellent and actually last year asked better and more relevant pre and post game questions and their content is generally very good. The risk though is it's always going to be controlled by the club in terms of who gets access, which will ultimately depend on behaviours. An example is the 4Lads blog who were granted access last year but walked away early on as they couldn't accept the conditions of their access.

All of this though is quite damning on the MSM and overall I have little sympathy. Sports journalism in this country has become driven by clickbait and in the main playing the OF against each other online. The standard of journalism is as poor as I can remember and in it's current form I struggle to see the value. Whilst I'm disappointed in Rangers for blocking them out there's also a part of me that wonders exactly what I will miss from people like Jackson or Keevins not being there.

Is this the way coverage is going and is it the phasing out of traditional media? If it is does that mean more control for clubs and less insight for fans in to the goings on at there clubs?

It looks just like another scheme for bringing in money for rangers, and also a way of controlling what’s discussed. As already said, the fact that one of the most prominent bloggers for rangers pulled out showed that even some aren’t comfortable with the level of control that’s being exerted.

Surprised the press haven’t been looking at the issues with club 1872. Seems like a decent spat going on in there.

I don't even know if it's about control as the main objective although that's an inevitable consequence. I think it's more the commercial angle just now, the commercial guy we have in is very good but seems to want to put a price on everything and anything. The pre season package I thought was really poor for example.

That Natasha burd from A state of Celtic mind is so far up her own erse that she’s attracting more Celtic DA’s than the “can you see the Rangers coming” brigade.

Ah, us football fans - relatively straightforward to influence, one way or another

That Sonia bird Rangers had - didn't help herself the constant stream of scantily clad selfies but she ought to have read the articles about her so she realised she really wasn't safe sitting in amongst them at Ibrox.

The love in for Dave King doesn’t look like lasting much longer. Seems to be a clear disconnect between him and the rangers board as well. The recent share issue looks like missing it’s target-unless there are some very large purchases by all accords.

I suspect the authors of those comments would pat their shants if a pretty lady actually spoke to them

I'm really not in accordance with objectifying woman. I find that linking a lady's physical attributes to a judgement of how good (or otherwise) they are as a person demeans the reality of their actual value to a progressive modern society.

Either that or I appreciate that she has a booty you could bounce a 10 pence off

Charging for media access is mental.

I assumed at first that this wouldn't include the spfls media partners but then I remembered the relationship between rangers and the BBC. You would think the spfl really should mandate media interaction so as to promote the league....

They’re charging fans £35 to have their pic taken with the SPFL trophy.

I don’t have a problem with the steps they’re taking-they’re doing everything they can to bring in income and become self sustaining. It’s up to folk to choose whether they pay for what’s on offer or not-although it’s a shame for fans that have backed the club through the last decade to have to pay for that pic with the trophy.
