Firstly, what is the feeling about Lukaku, should we have kept him. My viewpoint is we should have sent him on loan.
He is a top scorer but wasn't doing it for us?
Smalling. He was a pretty good player for us, but I see why we did whar we did. We had Bailly and Tuanzebi knocking at the door.
New contracts for Bailly, Jones, Mata, difficult ones without knowing the contract and reasoning.
It looks an obvious no for Jones imo.
Bailly, possible if only a short term.
Mata, I really don't know. Will he be of use, are they keeping him to begin as a coach. I'll say I don't know for that one.
Oh, and Matic/ That's a yes for me, we've nobody better at the moment, even though he's no longer top notch.
As RDD says Ole will have signed all these off, though in fairness we don't know what Smalling and Lukaku wanted.
I'm not too fussed about the extended contracts, or Smalling to be honest, but maybe we could have got a lot more out of Lukaku.
RDD has raised a quite interesting point.

I’d happily swap Martial for Lukaku

Doesn’t change the fact that Serie A is far weaker and it’s part of the reason he has looked so good there.
If he is good enough to play for a top team he’d be at one. Inter are a top club, not a top team.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
😂 he’s scored goals wherever he’s played. If he stayed in the PL he’d come close to hitting Shearer’s record eventually. This is a guy who scored nearly 100 PL goals by age 25. I’m sure by next year he’ll be at a bigger club. His ceiling isn’t Inter.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And no one is disputing that but the Euro’s was Lukaku in a nutshell. Brilliant and goals and against lesser opposition with less pressure but when the tough got going he went missing.
That’s why he’s never been elite.
What bigger club is signing a 29 year old Lukaku?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There was talk that Chelsea wanted him this window. If they can’t get Haaland they may want him. All comes down to cost. He’d certainly score goals at any big club. Just down to whoever can pay the £80 million plus it would cost.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don’t see anyone paying anything like that for him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We shall see. Either way he’s rebuilt his reputation and is regarded by many sane people as one of the best strikers in Europe. I don’t think that’s unfair and him leaving us was the best thing for everyone at the price Inter paid. Just wish we’d spent that money on a striker.

I think our need for another striker is overstated.

Italy have had stronger squads that haven’t won anything. I actually think the strength of the Italy squad does give you a good indication of where the league is, if not the results that Mancini’s getting from the team.
Obviously it lacks the money it once had, but the depth of Italian talent was also better back when it was arguably the top league.

Smalling - good player but there were obvious flaws in his game that didn't match how we wanted to move forward.
Lukaku - Actually always liked him at United, but became quite disruptive in the end and wanted to leave. Doing great at inter but I think it was the right decision. Even if you don't buy into the idea that he didn't suit our style I don't feel any real regret that he's left. Sometimes it doesn't work out

The prem always gets overrated, but Italy winning the Euros isn’t indicative of the strength of Serie A in comparison to the prem.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This ^
No more than Greece, Denmark or even France winning it can be used as measurement of the strengths of their domestic leagues in comparison to the PL
----------------------------------------------------------------------
While I do agree the fact is that unlike those countries the majority of Italy’s players play in Italy.
The won the Euro’s however by good management, spirit and of course quality.
They required 3 extra times and 2 penalty shoot outs. It’s not like they blew everyone away.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And international football is way below club level. When u watch big CL games then big euro countries face off the difference is obvious
