Can Beeks step up?

There’s a logical train of thought that Beeks might be the one to be used more if Pogba goes. They’re not the exact same type of midfielder but if the rumours are true about the 433 that Ole is going to use next season it would suit Beeks in that formation more than him being part of the ‘2’ in the 4231.

He’s a good player, certainly better than what we saw last season. If you play a guy every few weeks then it’s no surprise if he doesn’t show his talent on demand. Not everyone can be an instant success like Bruno. Beeks had the close season off so surely should be starting the season in midfield and hopefully we don’t need to bring someone in if Beeks can step up.

Can VDB turn his United career around?

I was excited when I initially saw him however that waned massively over the season. Yes he was always going to struggle been brought on with a few minutes to go in msny games or playing once every 4 or 5 games however he just never looked up to the pace of the game. Seemed to just hide in games to be honest, almost anonymous. I couldn't even tell you what sort of player he is or where his best position is

These are similar to my thoughts to be honest. Clearly a tidy player and I get that he's had pretty limited time but not one appearance really showed him stake a claim. Even if he was trying things and it wasn't quite working, that'd be something but he seems to sort of coast a little bit, keep it simple and looks a bit out of his depth.

He's done nothing to suggest he plays over Bruno. He doesn't have the energy or ability to press outside of the attacking third that you get from Fred, is no where near Pogba's level in terms of ball distribution or progression.

Squad player, for me. He may have been held back a touch last year while he got used to everything and he may get a bit more game time this year but I'd be surprised if he started regularly for us.

No proof of Pogba wanting out. He evidence he's rejected a contract just trash talk from the media.

Yes. Given a uninterested run of games in CM in a strong line up and he will.prove himself a quality player.

An uninterested run of games, sounds more like Pogba.

I doubt it. Looked miles off it 90% of the time he played.

I hope so, Robb.

I really like the flashes of talent that VDB has shown. He's clearly a tidy player lacking confidence. With a bit of consistency I don't see why he can't become a good player for us. I'd hate to seem him moved on without really getting a chance at United.

Great all rounder in midfield.

I'd be happy with him stepping in should Pogba go.

I think he’ll be better this season. But he wouldn’t fill the hole that Pogba leaves, he’s just got nowhere near as much ability. He’s a limited player that suits a particular way of playing, a way that we don’t play.

Spot on, but I wouldn't call him limited as he's quite allround in his skillset. He's basically a specialised player in finding space in/behind congested areas but technically still good enough to not be the odd one out in a pass and move styled squad.
And Utd don't play like that. He would be much better fit at Chelsea with those midfielders and their skills.
He's a nice guy so you won't hear a bad word from him, but deep inside he must be p1ssed off as this move to Utd basically screwed him out of the EC and soon WC selections.

I don’t think he does, which is why he excels in a particular area of the pitch with a certain way of playing. He looks very good at those things, but this team needs more than that with how we play - particularly in central midfield.

Maybe he’ll take a big leap next season and show he’s got a lot more strings to his bow, but I’d be surprised if he does.

If we can develop our style of football to be more suitable for his skillset that would be a big help for him. But I’m not convinced that will happen, so expecting him to replace Pogba's vastly superior attributes seems to be a bit misguided, it the club have those expectations.
