Interesting that Rice and now Phillips (according to Talkshiyte) are both worth about £100m but it remains England’s weakest area of the pitch which is why we have to play so defensively as we can’t hold the middle enough to take the game to the better sides with decent midfields.

Individually they can't hold the middle. Play them together and they form a master defence, like how the power rangers combine together to make one big Megazord.

I would like someone like Neves in the deep role though tbf, that can pass well through the lines and set the wingers off quickly. Probably someone better than him out there though, but would be interesting to see him in a side not solely focussed on defending.

I warmed to Rice a bit more last season but I'm not convinced he's what our side needs because it's off the ball where he excels, not on it although he does carry it well at times and we really need a player who can contribute defensively as well as move the ball forward with quality and consistency. In terms of defending I think he'd offer our defence more protection than Fred or McTominay because his positioning is superior and he anticipates danger better, particularly in and around the box but overall I don't think he'd be worth it.

I'm not a huge fan of Neves even though he'd offer things our midfield lacks. I think we can do much better if we're prepared to broaden our search.

Locatelli has no interest in joining Arsenal and would prefer Juventus but I'd be keen to see if we could tempt him. Failing that Bruno Guimaraes, Brozovic who still hasn't signed a new contract with Inter or Bennacer.

Team one of them with somebody like Bissouma or Caqueret and I think we'd be in really good shape in midfield for the first time in a long time.
