What's dumb is that Chelsea are doing the exact same thing they did when they sold Lukaku. Back then they didn't trust the young unproven Lukaku so they bought Costa and sold him. Now they don't trust the young unproven Abraham and they're selling him and buying 28 year old Lukaku.

In Lukaku we sold a very young player who did not want to stay at the club as he saw no way in with the strikers we had. We have now signed a player with vast experience and maturity.
Sadly Tammy and you can bookmark this will never be a top top striker, I believe the club are absolutely correct in selling him.
We have also had no choice with many other young players and this season as shown it, we have to sell them as they wont sign new contracts.
And I fully expect at least 2 will go on to become very very good players.

People said Lukaku will never be a top top striker. People criticised both his talent and his mentality and said he'd never be good enough for a top club. 7 years later and we're spending 100m on him.

You just never know. It is the exact same scenario though, furrrking off the young unproven striker who still hasn't fulfilled his potential for the older in his prime striker. Costa was great but short term. Clearly looking back we can see Lukaku was the better long term bet. Just feels like we're making the same mistake again.

It's worse than that Sandude, we also lost out on 7 years of performances from Lukaku. In that period Lukaku would easily have scored 150+ goals for us. All the years we spend putting up with Morata, Higuain, Werner etc., we would've had Lukaku instead.

The problem with this argument is it's difficult to argue selling him was a mistake given the trade off. This isn't like Pogba for example, United gained nothing from letting him go (not even any money), the decision to swap Lukaku for Costa effectively bought 2 PL titles.

If we win the big trophies with Lukaku now, and if Abraham becomes a 100mil+ player in 8 years time, the argument will be the same if that day should come. Made the sacrifice but got the reward, the ends justified the means

Lukaku scored more goals for Everton in 16/17 than Costa did for Chelsea, so to say that decision won two league titles is probably wrong.

I don't think there should be any question that looking back with the benefit of hindsight, we would have been far better off nurturing Lukaku and maybe not winning the league in 2015 but then going on to have a decade of top performances and 150-200 goals from one of the best strikers in the world compared to signing Costa, him performing for about 1 season in total between 2014 and 2017 (He went missing completely in the second half of the Conte title winning season), then losing Costa because he happens to be a massive bell3nd and then spending years watching donkey after donkey try and fail to become the main striker at Chelsea.

In that period, the only good striker we had was Abraham and whilst he's not the finished product currently, it's so naive and foolish in my opinion to let him go and risk him coming back in 2-3 years time a top class striker with a grudge against Chelsea.

We don't know if Lukaku would've scored more goals than Costa for Chelsea during that time, but we do know Costa's goals were pivotal to both the 14/15 & 16/17 title wins, so it wasn't a mistake. We made a trade off with instant success in mind & that's exactly what we got.

I do agree not trying to keep Abraham is foolish btw, strikers who put the ball in the damn net isn't something we should take for granted given recent history, but if Lukaku scores the goals that win us major trophies at the expense of selling Abraham you can't really argue it'll be a mistake given the club know what they want when making that judgement - and any PL or CL should NEVER be taken for granted/excused for a theoretical scenario where we might've won more with different decisions, IMO anyway.

The whole signing feels wrong to me. Buying back for 100m the player we sold because we didn't want to nurture a young player and instead wanted a striker currently in their prime and in the process of doing this doing the exact same thing and buying a striker in their prime and selling a young promising striker.

If Abraham joins Man City or United in 3 or 4 years and he goes on to score 150+ goals for them, people will look back on this summer and think what were Chelsea thinking, the same way they look back on the summer Chelsea sold Lukaku.
