Are the UK and the US right to be pulling out of the region? Or should they keep a force there permanently to stop the surge from the Taliban?
Or is the region just something that the West will never quite understand and is forever destined to be temporarily held but always falling back into the hands of the people that know the region better than the soldiers that come and go?
I suspect as part of the belt and road strategy that at some point in the next 10-15 years China might send troops there - if so they might have a different approach to things that the West never quite did.

Compelling documentary that one. One of the better ones I’ve seen on the Iraq war.

We shouldn't have been there but I think it's wrong to up sticks and allow the Taliban to spread their poisonous beliefs.

Would the Russians still be in Afghanistan if the west didn't go in?

Russian army pulled out in 1989.
West invaded in 2001.
What do you think?

The problem with the West, is that they show all the muscle, but never fully finish of what they start. They have no Plan, other than a military intervention on how to make countries better they have intervened in.
This is not new to the current Afghanistan situation, it has been going on for centuries. Send in the troops, usually for a bit of political boost. Leave them there for a few years, pull out, and hey presto, it soon goes back to how it was before the troops went in.

Tbf he’s right. The Afghans were supported by the CIA and no doubt armed by Pakistan and the USA.

What a tragedy this is turning into already, Taliban already seized Kabul, women about to go back to being less than dirt. Afghans desperately trying to escape or persuade the troops to stay.
