Jesse Lingard

Is there any way back for him? I just read an interview where he talked about his demons and how he’s worked hard to overcome them.

He was never the most popular player in our fan base and I remember the palaver when he signed that contract and got £100k a week (ahh, the halcyon days when £100k a week seemed a lot for a bench warmer) but he was far from the worst player to ever wear the shirt and scored some very important goals.

He may never be good enough to be starting every week and perhaps that’s what he wants so may end up leaving but if he was happy to be a squad player and he could get back to the decent levels of 2015-2018 would anyone begrudge him that? He seems to have come through a lot of adversity and he deserves massive respect for that and his form last season suggests that his issues of the past few years might have contributed to his nightmare 19/20 season where a lot of goodwill he’d built up was nuked from orbit. At his best for us he was actually quite decent. His FA cup winner will live long in the memory.

Jesse Lingard 2.0?

I think the repective Rashford, Sancho, Martial, and Cavani situations have meant that a move away has been delayed. All three have had delays in joining the squad and getting preseason for one reason or another. That leaves James, Mata, Greenwood and Lingard as our only senior attackers who had a full preseason. Maybe you could add Pogba to that list. So it makes sense that Ole would delay any move until the end of the window, by which time Sancho, Cavani, and Martial should be up to speed.

I see a lot of people telling him what he should do, for his sake etc but if he wants to stay at the club he's been at his entire life and accepts that his role would be as a squad player, getting time in the domestic cups, any dead rubber cl games and filling in occasionally in the league etc then that's his prerogative and I'm happy for him to have that role.

The problem is that we have numerous players who fall into that category and Ole doesn't trust them in league or CL games, so the team is knackered by the end of every season.

At the end of the day, it is his prerogative as you say. But our balance still isn't right between fit for purpose and filler and it will likely create issues again this season.

Won't leave until he gets same money he's on with us. Just like so many other players. So sad but that's how football has gone.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Football has gone? You think players 20-30 years ago weren't interested in money, and would happily take a massive pay cut?

Football is a career that is over by the time they're mid 30s if they're lucky. That money has to last a long time after that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Many Premier League footballers are multi-millionaires by the time they retire. I cant really feel sorry them. Most wealthy people tell you that earning the first million is the hardest. Your future of leisure after that should look after itself if you have a modicum of acumen.

Lingard is typical of many United players over the past 10 years. Not quite good enough for United but still overpaid, sitting on long daft contracts given to them by Ed the clown.

West Ham is ideal for Jesse if he wants to play regular football.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And most premier league footballers will have mortgages on multi million pound homes, kids in expensive schools, wives with expensive spending habits.

And those millions have to last 50 years post retirement. I dont blame any player for being motivated by maximising their income. It's a job, not a fun hobby.

Well he isn't in the match day squad today and James , Mata and Peirera are. So, I think that is a big signal that he is off soon. He's been good in preseason, no reason why he wouldn't be in the squad given that he is suited against high energy team like Leeds.

He had Covid. I don't think we're going to shift any of them

Yes its a job and of course like most people we want to max our incomes.

But if you start at 36 with £10m+ in the bank you should be ok for the rest of your days. And that is if you don't even do anything work wise again and just invest it wisely. Unless you are a complete idiot.

Again, my heart bleeds for these footballers.
