I want to preface this article with the following:
1) It was only one game and it could all very well go to sheite next week.
2) The whole performance and team ethic was such a surprise to me!
Anyway, to the point. I thought we looked so much more solid defensively. It was like Sanchez and Dier were actually protected and just had to keep it simple. There were very few last ditch tackles/ decisions to be made by either - which obviously suits them.
My take is that Skipp, whilst having a few nervy moments early on, had a quite unremarkable game. Which makes me think he did his job really well and gave protection to the back 2.
Hojberg was kind of doing that as well but he was freed up by Skipp to move the ball forward more. He’s always great a breaking up play and good positioning.
Tanganga was a beast at RB and Reggie was solid. Again, both keeping it simple and never being exposed too much - helped by PEH, Skipp and their respective wingers.
Dele got back a bit too. Although I see much more potential in Lo Celso and NDombele in that 3rd man role in CM.
Great result. Totally unexpected from me. Let’s hope we get a few in this week and push on.
Kane can go now IMO. Sell him ASAP and invest in another CB, a creative mid, Striker and RB.
Also sell Dier, Dele, Aurier and possibly NDombele. I think those could bring in 70mil or more.
I’d like to know your view on why we looked more solid defensively or if I imagined it.

Kevin de Bruyne, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus were introduced in the final 20 minutes, while England's Euro 2020 pair Kyle Walker and John Stones were unused substitutes, as were Aymeric Laporte, Rodri and Bernardo Silva - a formidable array of talent.
Was that over confidence, or what?

Nice to see the hard work in pre season paying off. From the get go Nuno set out his 4 3 3 formation and has stuck with it ever since.
Probably the best start to the season in years against the champions.
Apart from the first ten minutes we grew into the game and crowd sounded amazing. Feel sorry for all the fans who said they would not be going again this season and missed out.
So happy for Nuno, who is likeable and making the best out of a weaker squad than last season. No complaints, he just gets on with it.
Really happy for Tanganga and Skipp. Two local boys who played a massive part today. Especially Tanganga who played as well at right back since the Kyle Walker days.
Son, Lucas and Stevie B all linked up well and others as mentioned the shape of team was well drilled.
Really hope Dele puts in more and better performances than he did today. He put in a good shift.

Agreed. I was a bit worried when he pushed Grealish over that the place of the game would be too much but he was solid throughout. Good positioning and solid passing. Better than Winks already.
