Last night!

Unlike some I do not think last night was a disaster, in fact there are some positives to be had from it.

Firstly, we know that certain “fringe" players are actually nowhere near the fringe at all.

Secondly, we either decide this is not a competition we want to be in and therefore play near enough the same team next week in the hope we lose, which is not something I would advocate.

Thirdly, if we do want to continue with the competition then we need to field a much stronger team. It must surely be within a players capabilities to play in two games a week, especially this early in the season.

Fourthly, I would guess most of the team last night had hardly played together even in training, so no wonder we looked disjointed and disorganised.

Pacos looked a tidy side, they finished 5th last season in Portugal. Probably at best a League 1 top half side, however they did look as though they wanted this result more than we did.

If we want to take this seriously and progress then it’s the first team out next Thursday. We then play Watford on the Sunday, without being disrespectful we should win that game and having played Thursday night should not affect our ability to overcome Watford.

We will also know by then the outcome of the Kana saga, so we can move on as a club.

I also think we have problems signing a new striker purely due to the potential of City buying Kane for well in excess of £100m. This has inflated the prices of targets significantly, and who can blame those clubs for increasing a players valuation.
Earlier attempts at signing a striker was difficult in getting top players, as they would know Kane was always going to be first pick.

Did I like losing last night? No! However I am pragmatic and believe our focus should be on finishing in the Top 6 at least and potentially the FA Cup.

I say this.
The squad lacks the depth needed to play through the EPL season.
And I look at it this way.......

The squad we have ATM is a total joke.
Here are the guys you may be able to depend upon:
Lloris , Gollini
Tanganga, Rodon, Davies?, Dier?, Reguilon, Aurier? Sanchez?, Doherty?
Lo Celso, Moura, Hojbjerg, Sissoko? Winks? Alli
Son, Bergwijn, Kane

New and untested: Romero, Gil, Scarlett, Parrot,
Any name with a "?" means that player is either not dependable or should have been traded, or both.

I count exactly 12 names without "?".

6 names with "?"
And 4 new or untested guys.
That is a total of 22 players 10 of which are questionable.
And I have included Kane.

Can we even put out an unquestionable first eleven?
And what happens with a couple of injuries?
This squad is way too thin to enter a new season in the Premiere League.
Unless there is some last minute great trading, I expect this season to be a disaster for the club.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

But then you’ve always been a glass half full kind of fella Ted
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well...half full?
That would be good.
There will be empty glasses this season if Levy doesn't get off his butt.
Just go through the squad..like I did above....
it damned obvious the squad is not as good as last year.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I suspect like most Prem clubs we will have at least 3 new faces through the door next week. If we can win the 3 games also then we will have not been harmed by leaving it late.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"At least 3 new faces"...in ONE week?
And trading out all the dead wood?
Don't hold your breath on that hope!

Decent article Genius. But I do wish Spurs like most Prem sides would stop disrespecting European teams and thinking they are all farmers teams, they are not. Spurs got exactly what they deserved last night, a beating.

Problem is you say go for the FA Cup, but we all know in the early rounds it will be the squaddies again, so any half decent side Spurs play, they will knock Spurs out.

If domestic and european cup competitions are going to be a target, then they have to be taken seriously from the off. So many times over the years, a weakened Spurs team have easily been beaten by so called lesser sides. You need a decent mix of first XI and the better squad players to play in these cup games. Just throwing together squad players with Academy players simply will not work.

I agree Sandy, we do need to start taking the FA Cup more seriously in future.

As for this season, it is too early for the doom and gloom that Ted & Don propagate every time!

I agree there Genius. Don is not to bad, but Ted will criticise the team whatever the result. He was even moaning after Spurs beat City last week. Not sure why he even supports Spurs, he is so miserable.

I wouldn't go full strength in the next game against them, I don't think that's worth it.
I'd play the squad players and fill any holes with first team players, none of the youth.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nuno did that in Portugal...and got beat by a nonentity.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Just ignore John and Scarlett in the starting line up? Replace John with Lucas and Scarlett with Son and it would have been a different story.

This comp cannot be taken seriously, the only benefits are giving squad players some time and pushing on the coefficient points hopefully for next season.
Play the same team next week, get knocked out and just concentrate on pushing on for a top 4 finish and 2 good cup runs scored

LOL Two good cup runs!!!! It will be exactly the same in the two domestic cups, play squad players, draw Rochdale away in the LC get knocked out. FA Cup draw any Prem side home or away, play the squad players get knocked out.

Not just about last night mate, we all know if you don`t sprinkle any Spurs team with a decent smattering of first teamers they will not win any cup games. They prove it year after year.

You can only concentrate on the cups if you are going to go strong in every round.

It’s ridiculous that we do not have a striker in waiting to take over from Kane. We should’ve signed one a long time ago. Now any club has levy by the short and curly’s as they will know how desperate we will be to replace Kane.

The way this club is run sometimes is so fack in amateur and short sighted.

If Levy was as shrewd as he's hyped he would take £125m for Kane and offer Wolves £60m for Jimenez. Fosun would agree to sell (wrongly) based on the fact that they did without him last season and are still in the Prem.
