Sheffield United 2 - 1 Derby County-EFL Cup

SHEFFIELD UNITED v DERBY COUNTY - Milk Cup Round 2

1945 BRAMALL LANE Tuesday 24th August 2021

The return of the cup which no-one loves - always a paradox as in do we go in gung ho to go through and have another game to play with our threadbare squad or quietly succum and concentrate on the play-offs?

There will be a vastly changed side of course - I had the pleasure of attending the Salford game and was pleasantly surprised at the makeshift and disparate team - they did well.

The u23s game has been cancelled for Monday night - I hope this does not bode for the First XI.

We may even see the return of Wayne Rooney in the line-up - this latest being a mischivous statement by Micah Richards.

However the big news is the difficulty of obtaining tickets for the Notts game on Saturday. Hopefully the 'unclaimed STs' will be released on Thursday - atm we will be lucky to get 23,000 in the ground.

Someone remind Cat and Dixie that it's a LATE K.O....................
(This bit is Ivory - very subtle difference)

Wayne saying hes really looking forward to Saturday.

Whos was the manager who said it was just another game?

I would be if Forest hadn’t lost all their games up to now. They are due to get a result

On a positive note ... I predicted 2-1
Sadly, so did a few others.
Anyhow... its a pointless competition as we're never going to get to the final. Concentrate on the league and pick up points needed to counteract the inevitable deduction now that the accounts have been resubmitted

Me, you and Banno with 2-1

Will try and update shortly. Been out bowling so missed the game tonight.

Morning After view :
Well, with the game not being televised, and like CatalanRam I'm in Spain ATM. So an hour ahead to UK. With that me & Mrs H went to bed.
Checked youtube and watched the short highlights not knowing the result. From the run of play and chances we had I was surprised we lost....as Rooney has said many times - we need to be more clinical in front of goal though. Hey Ho....onwards to Saturday....where a feast of footballing entertainment surely awaits us....UTR

Seen the goals from last night and why is Allsopp playing at Derby. The lad is useless

And Marshall not in the Scotland squad due to lack of game time at Derby. Good that we apparently have sufficient resources to drop an international 'keeper!

Have now been able to watch a video of the whole game. We really do have some very talented young players who could well make a permanent step-up before too long: McDonald, Williams, Brown, Watson, Hutchinson etc. Sibley, Bird, Buchanan, Knight and Stretton we already know about and Cashin can be added, I reckon.

Derby played some lovely stuff with purposeful building from the back and varied passing from then on, often very incisive. Certainly, two mistakes cost us. I would not say Allsop is useless; he was in two minds whether to catch the ball or palm it away and in the end did neither but otherwise did nothing wrong. McDonald seemed to catch the ball under his studs when trying to pass back - a bit unlucky. Yes, we need to be more clinical if we are to score more but that could come.

Sibley was man of the match for me and for once, hats off to the ref who was excellent altho he had little to do as both sides wanted to play football.

Still very optimistic provided we don't get injuries etc and a points deduction.

Fairly clear rhat the reasons that Marshall is not playing are financial not footballing. The rumour was that a payment to Wigan is due on his next appearance. Whatever. No point blaming Rooney for it or castigating Allsop. Credit to Rooney for not making excuses and being supportive of those who he is forced to play. Would that we were all so supportive. Until things change it is what it is.

Ryan Allsop has been the victim of homophobic abuse while doing his job and to his credit reported the crime to police. This was while he was a Wycombe player. I thought he should have done better with Sheff United's first goal last night but we all make the occasional mistake. Probably he will play better if he thinks fans support him rather than label him useless because of one mistake.
