Bryan Gil, what a breath of fresh air

After seeing him at close quarters last night at WHL, Spurs have a real gem on their hands. He was everywhere, knows how to pass the ball, gets stuck in, beats players for fun, and plays with a swagger. He is so comfortable on the ball. He definitely looks the best young player Spurs have signed since Dele half a dozen seasons back. Cannot be long before he forces his way into the first XI. He has also made Bergwin up his game, who looked very decent when he came.

As for the game, job done, and through to the Group Stages. Nuno learnt his lesson very quickly after last week`s loss. You have to mix and match. Simply cannot just play squad players and youngsters, there always has to be some first XI players involved. Makes it so much easier to negotiate games like last night. Last night he got the balance absolutely spot on.

One big disappointment from last night was Sessignon, I thought he was awful, lacking in confidence, and everything Gil did, he did the opposite. I really don`t know where he goes from here. He looks a Championship player at best, and if he is not going to do it against last night`s opposition, then that is where he will end up back playing. Shame really, but he looks, like Ndombele a big waste of money. Nearly £90 million on those two.

Harry Kane did what he does best scores goals, and I would be surprised if he is not starting against Watford on Sunday, after the crowd gave him a standing ovation when he left the field yesterday. I was annoyed with him for a week or two when the story broke, but it didn`t take me and the rest of the fans to get back on board with one of our own. Just sign a new Contract Harry, and see out your time at Spurs, and who knows there may be some trophies to be had at the club you really love.

On to Watford now, and hopefully continue the good start to the season.

Shame about Sess, also Jack Clarke... we seem to pay money for young players who never quite make the step up.

Chuck in Njie, Nkoudou, NDombele, our scouting has been a bit off the last few years

Juande, I think it may have changed now, all of those players were purchased under Poch, who didn`t have a great record re signings. I think this years purchases have all been fine, Gollini, Gil and Romero all look decent buys.

Sess has definitely been underwhelming but as already mentioned, he’s 21, suffered injury setbacks and not had a run of games.

Plenty of time for him to come good.

He has been at the club since 2019 now, and only made six Prem starts, I think he is on borrowed time now, even though he is still young. Not showing nearly enough. Sometimes you just have to move on.

I watched the first half and a bit of the second and I thought Sessegnon looked ok (not great, but not bad), his link up play with Gil was solid.

I know they are weak opposition but my main takeaway was that it was a positive, professional display, a lot of effort from everyone on the pitch and a million miles from the first leg

Gil just needs to fill out a bit. The premierships better teams won’t give him much time and space and he will buffeted from pillar to post.
He needs to be bedded in slowly as a young kid in a key position but good work off and on the ball and a lot to like.

There is a balance to be reached physically.

Some players are never going to be able to physically compete. Its more about balance and agility, riding challenges, being quicker and smarter than the bigger more aggressive defender. Look at Gil, how 'bulked' can the guy get? Even maxed out he'd probably be 91/2 stone. There is some growth for him to do but to me its more a case of getting use to the physicality of the PL rather than trying to emulate Traore's biceps before he can be expected to play.

My take aways were:

1. despite the low key competition the effort was very clear to see
2. We showed an energy in the press that we rarely saw under Jose. Not just pressing but a high intensity to it, pressing the ball in groups.
3. Forward play and possession was far more purposeful and the movement was really good, especially from Gil and Doherty. and Winks was progressive and inventive in his passing
4. When Kane dropped deep there were plenty ahead of him
5. Romero looked good but incredibly laid back and calm on the ball and can pass.
6. GLC still yet to impress me. Not quite sure what he does. Doesnt seem a final ball assist kida guy, doesnt seem like a deep sitting CM/DM. Doesnt ping it about from the middle of the park. Still puzzled

Good list, I'd also add that we used width for the first time in what feels like decades and it made such a difference to the pace of our attack - no more turgid thousand pass moves!

After the dark cloud over the club for the past couple of seasons it was just nice to ENJOY watching a Spurs game again.

Sessegnon is coming back from an injury, give him time.

Sess will be fine, no worries about him, by the end of this season he will be an integral part of that squad.

Clarke - not for me, gil looks miles ahead of him.

Scarlett - not ready in my opinion, bit on the small side for now, but the quality is definitely there.

Agreed.

Also thought that in both this and our PL games we look fitter.

It would be good to see Winks get a start ahead of Skipp because when on his game his use of the ball is a lot better and it is made easier for him if the movement ahead of him is good. It wasnt under Jose and you could see then that Winks was also gripped with fear that he may give the ball away so just played it sideways and backwards 90% of the time.

Can’t agree on GLC. Thought he was very good. A goal and an assist can’t be too bad, and he created plenty of other opportunities too.
