Ian Wright discussing Mason Greenwood

Earlier this year I started dipping into the world of football podcasts (and got some good recommendations from the JA606 hive mind). Having shopped around, I've settled on some favourites. The Athletic's output is good (the United podcast Talk of the Devils, and the general football ones have good coverage). But my favourite is The Ringer FC, which alternates between two shows: Stadio, hosted by Ryan Hunn and Musa Okwonga, and Wrighty's House, hosted (as you might expect) by Ian Wright. All of the three hosts are great - funny, insightful and likeable. I'm really struck by how my attitude to Wright has changed over the years. In the early 90s I couldn't stand him: thought of him as a gobby, angry little man, who was also guilty of being an incredible goal scorer for a rival team. Now, particularly when given the space to speak in more than pundit soundbites, he proves to be a really thoughtful, eloquent and generous character. (Perhaps my change of attitude reflects a bit of personal growth on my part, not just how he has matured.)

Anyway, aside from recommending The Ringer in general, I recommend you listen in to the latest episode of Wrighty's House, where they focus on the talent and development of our own Mason Greenwood. I think we're all deeply impressed with him (apart, I believe, from IAmMe, for whom the Platonic ideal of a forward is Mark Hately). But it's instructive to hear a legendary striker of Wright's stature talking about how excited he is about the tools Greenwood has, together with a maturity of understanding of the game that Wright says he didn't develop until he joined Arsenal relatively late in his career.

(The episode also commences with a discussion of how badly the Gooners have started the season, which I believe you'll find quite enjoyable content too.)

I’d love to hear an IAmMe podcast.

not going to happen ......

..... way too busy dealing with those in the 'non-virtual world' that struggle with reality to engage in dealing with those in the 'virtual world' that also struggle with both realities.

And most probably wouldn't "love" it anyway

I'd love for you to expand on this comment, either here or in the audio medium.

Is this the first time he has ever engaged with anyone on the forum?

You don’t have to engage with us, just enlighten us with your vast knowledge. You’re a polymath, I’m sure you could pick any subject at random and blow our minds like you do with football.

Mason Greenwood seems to be the one thing that unites United fans at the moment (apart from, as you say, IAmMe - who in his own words 'will let us know' once Greenwood demonstrates he is of the required quality). The kid is a phenomenon.

I think a lot of credit should go to how he's been managed by both club and country (Iceland-gate aside). I really liked what Southgate came out and said about the reason behind his omission. I think the result that he's thus far been somewhat overlooked by the British media, which can only be good for him at this stage. I mean, they know he's good, but I feel like they haven't quite cottoned on to the fact we've got a generational talent on our hands here. They will in time, I'm sure.

How many league goals do you think he will get this season?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Should be aiming for 15 or so, which would be a brilliant return for a 19/20 year old.

My only worry would be him losing out due to the Ronaldo/Sancho deals. Although he shouldn't - I don't think it's a stretch to say he's been our best player in 2021. Probably alongside Shaw and Cavani.

Gonna be very interesting to see how Ole rotates players such as Greenwood and Sancho now that Ronaldo is here. I hope Sancho doesn’t turn into a Kagawa the same way his role was lost when we bought RVP a few weeks after.

Yeh, I was thinking about 15 would be a good season. Got a bet with a mate on under/over 13.5. Not a bad start for me!

I enjoy this.

I will also give it a listen.
