Richard Arnold

Manchester United are close to appointing Richard Arnold as Ed Woodward’s successor as their new chief executive.

The announcement could be made as soon as next month with the changing of the guard coming at a time of renewed optimism following Cristiano Ronaldo's return to Old Trafford.

Arnold, currently Manchester United's group managing director, is reported to have been vying with at least two other United executives for the job - one of the most powerful positions in British sport.

Just 3 more months left of potato head let’s hope this bloke is a huge improvement on him.

Gill took a similar path.

He's Trent Alexander Arnold's uncle isn't he? Hopefully he'll be throwing some grenades in at family gatherings. "Did you know (player x) earns this?"

Yep, that's the guy.

Alexander-Arnold is the nephew of former Reading and Millwall footballer, and former Manchester United club secretary, John Alexander.

Different guy

Yes you're right. Ignore my previous comment then!

Wait to see how he actually does but seems like we’ve repeated ourselves by promoting a money man with no footballing background into a role most of us would hope someone with some kind of footballing background would come in. Not really surprising though sadly.

If he’s good at his job he doesn’t need to come from a football background, David Gill didn’t.

Exactly. He is the CEO not one of the coaches. The football running of things has been given to Murtough and your old mate Dazza.

Darren

How often has that happened at other clubs, interested to know? Gill was a success but a lot of that was due to him being trusted by Ferguson and them having a good relationship and understanding. Do you have no concerns with Arnold in this new role, I don’t know personally but will always have my concerns when the Glazers are making decisions.

It’s pretty common. Not many clubs - especially the very biggest - appoint people in these positions with a background in football. Finance and business are usually the backgrounds they come from.

Where they succeeded is surrounding themselves with footballing people at lower levels of the club. It’s why so many sporting directors were ex players/coaches etc.

I have concerns about anyone in this role because they will be working for the Glazers. That’s ultimately the problem with this club. But the lack of footballing background isn’t the issue for me.

Even looking at Woodward now we’ve seen him taking more of a backseat with the footballing side of things. So we may not see many of the issues he had with the new man given the new structure of the club.

What is worth considering is what he’ll be doing differently and how that will impact on the club. He’ll have his own ideas, even if he’s still doing the bidding of the Glazers, and that could be positive and negative. Maybe the commercial side of the club isn’t as successful without Woodward? Maybe he’s more ruthless with sacking managers? Maybe he doesn’t have the same influence over the Glazers as Woodward to release funds?

We’ll have to wait and see.

Yeah I agree with that.
