Yeah he's not the second best in the league. He's a very good defender, turns well for his frame and good clearing high balls into the area. He's an asset when teams sit back as he's not afraid to make himself the extra man and bring the ball forward.

He has his flaws of course. Not the quickest, which is fine when next to VVD and his TV head in the opposition area. Also his injury record. Hopefully he is rested during the week, which I'm confident he will be.

Sod's law he stays injury free all season.

Brilliant player no doubt, if only he could stay fit.

When he gets a consistent run of games he's one of the most reliable defenders in the league that's for sure. I do think that is to do with him being partnered with VVD as well.

If he can stay fit for a sustained period of time then that can only be good news. He keeps Gomez and Konate out of the team for sure.

I may be scoffed at but we was top of the league at Xmas when he was still playing. As soon as he was I jured that was it for us.

I think what the OP doesn't realise is that Matips game is helped a lot by playing with Virgil who is comfortably the best defender in the league.

Take Matip and put him in the arsenal team and you would cringe. He is easy on the eye and is comfortably a better defender than Gomez of whom I have bever understood the hype.

Not better than the 3 City Center backs, certainly not better than Rudiger, Varane and possibly Slab head.

Probably 8th best defender and important for the way liverpool want to play.
