Getting the best from Lukaku

Obviously, I am more than happy with how the season has started and with the return of big Rom. However, I feel we are not playing enough to his strengths.

We've got a fabulous all-round forward. He can hold up the ball, he can run behind, he's a poacher, he's good in the air ... so why the fck are we slowing the play down in front of goal?????????

At the weekend and last night, we slowly played the ball in front of the Zenit defence, we got to crossing positions or positions where we could play Lukaku through and we checked back ... why? The man is a finisher - put him through or cross the ball into the box. In the last two games, he's had 4 chances and scored 3 goals - the lesson is MAKE CHANCES FOR HIM!!!! Football can be a simple game and our current squad have too many philosophers (Jorginho, Kova, Mount, Ziyech) ... put him in on goal ffs!!!!!

Rant over!

maybe they don't trust his first touch

His first touch is fine - not his best asset but by no means anywhere near as bad as his detractors make out. Anyway if you PLAY HIM THROUGH or if you CROSS the ball, his first touch will be an effort on gaol more often than not - and he has few problems scoring!

If we played Chilwell or James as wingbacks they might get to the line and cross it...Alonso won't

Actually pleased to see Chilly get minutes yesterday...seems very out of favour...TT doesn't fancy him too much it seems, plus if Pulisic ever gets fackin fit he might provide width too

I just think, that once he gets to play,Timo and Rom could become a deadly partnership. It's still early days yet, and I'm sure T T will get them working together, can't wait.

There were numerous opportunities to put crosses into the box for Lukako to get onto but for unknown reasons they failed to materialise.

Also quite possible...if the rumours of him going back to Germany are just that...

Give Lukaku the scent of opposition defenders pre-match is the way to get the best out of him

I see what you're saying but I would argue against it. Thing with Lukaku is although his chances to goals ratio must be up there with the best in the world, he's always been a guy who's needed that little bit extra time & space to fashion chances for himself without help - and by help I mean other players movements widening his openings. For all his strengths he's not a 'make something happen out of nothing' guy.

He's like the ultimate concentration punisher. If you shrink his time & space for 90 solid minutes he probably won't score, hence his poor big game (vs. better players) record for so long, but forget about him for one second, focussing on other threats, oh look he's scored . It's why (IMO) he struck gold playing in a two with Martinez at Inter, that secondary direct threat was always there to pull defences away. And wouldn't you know we happen to have a pacey striker who likes the left channel too to replicate that formula

I'm fine with all that - in the end that's what a top striker is. You get players like Ronaldo and Salah who are forwards and score loads and then you get strikers and forwards who don't get enough goals. I don't need Lukaku to fashion a chance, I need people to fashion the chances for him. If we give him 4 or 5 decent chances every game, he'll score, something we didn't have last season.
