Jimmy Greaves the greatest goalscorer

ever in my book. He used to play on pitches like gluepots, was hacked, kicked, fouled, but still broke nearly every goalscoring record possible.

He was a legend at two clubs, Chelsea and Spurs, and I was very lucky to have seen him play for both. For Chelsea I remember him scoring a goal at WHL with only one boot on, and for Spurs I saw practically every one of his goals, as I used to go away as well as home back in the day. He was phenomenally good, and very humble with it. I was there when he scored his hat-trick against Blackpool on his Spurs debut in December 1961.

If anything his Chelsea stats were even more remarkable than his Spurs stats. For Chelsea he scored a remarkable 122 goals in season 1956/57 at youth level. He twice scored five in a game for Chelsea, three or four times he scored four in a game, plus many many hat-tricks. He scored his 100th league goal at the age of 20 and a few months, and his 124 goals at Chelsea were all scored before his 21st birthday.

At Spurs he broke the club scoring record, and including his goals at Chelsea, he headed the top division scoring charts six times. He also scored six hat-tricks for England.

He still holds both the Spurs and Chelsea goals record for a single season, 41 for Chelsea and 36 for Spurs.

Many, if not all of his records will never ever be beaten.

When we talk of legends, Jimmy really was one.

He was also a very unlucky footballer, he joined Chelsea shortly have they won the 1st division title, he joined Spurs the season after they won the Double and he of course missed out on playing for England in the 1966 WC Final through injury. But all that aside, there has not been a goalscorer to touch him in the 65 years since he made his debut at WHL for Chelsea, where he scored the first of his 366 league goals, all scored in the top division.

I cannot be at the ground today unfortunately, but please give him a great send off, both sets of supporters should be really proud that he played for our clubs.

RIP mate.

I knew you of all people would be upset Sandy. My grandads favourite ever player too. He said the ball was guaranteed in the net if Jimmy Greaves was through on goal.
