british asian players

was having a read up on the bradford v u21's game last night on the MEN website and there was a piece about zidane iqbal at utd.

it went on to say that despite making up 7% of the british population, just 0.25% of professional footballers are from a british asian background.

the FA recently launched south asian heritage month which involved promoting positive stories from asian participants across the game, something Iqbal was involved with.

why do people think the % is so low?

do many see cricket as their main sport?
different cultural upbringings?
different family expectations?

Have you always gone by this username?

I remember manutdaredevil, Rob and there was an older guy, served in the forces. Bit cantankerous.

Modern football starts at a young age and if there is talent out there then it gets selected.

There are plenty of black people in football, a group that is discriminated against fairly consistently, but yet they still make it as footballers as they have the ability. Race tends not to be a barrier at all.

I do not think that being Asian would have much impact on a coach or scouts choice, if they have the ability.

Maybe at a young age they may think it may not be worth scouting an Asian child / or seeking them to join their academy as their parents may well resist, but really if there is talent there they will usually try.

I think it is more likely that Asian kids are not given the same opportunities by their parents and therefore do not enter the system, even with talent.

Added to that there are less Asian role models so there is probably also a lower proportion of Asian kids aspiring to be top footballers so again, even less coming into the game.

The players of the future are being made and coached from a very young age and in my experience of youth football there are few/no barriers when you show talent. Coaches/scouts are pretty single minded in this respect. Obvious the odd bad egg amongst them but generally talent makes it.

Ya decent players but not elite.

Nakata was pretty damn good back in the day when seria A was no joke. Posted some good numbers too and earned a big move. Pretty sure it was more than the PL record at the time but I may be wrong.
