What I find amusing is the guy could have just skipped past the keeper and stuck it in the open goal. Instead he decided to take a dive in the hope of getting the keeper sent off. Feel like the penalty save was karma there.

Yeah he did, but he didn't need to take such a heavy touch, just a slight shimmy and he was round McLaughlin who'd totally sold the jersey. Instead he went for the old toe it past the keeper and take a dive. Tbh I think the rule should be if you wouldn't have got to the ball then it's not a penalty regardless of whether there's actual contact.
