Was the European Super League all bad?

Don’t get me wrong, I was completely against the proposed European Super League at the time, and still am, but a lot of the issues that caused Europe’s big clubs to want to break away still remain, in fact they’ve been exacerbated.

Take for example FIFA and UEFA overreach which has long been a problem for all clubs. FIFA in recent months have done nothing to help clubs navigate the World Cup qualifiers causing severe disruption to domestic leagues. In recent months they’ve also threatened to push through a bi-annual World Cup which literally nobody wants except FIFA themselves and have extended the tournament to 64 teams or something ridiculous, again without any kind of consultation.

Meanwhile UEFA are still pushing on with their ridiculous plans for an extended CL format which, while the breakaway clubs actually support them on this, nobody else wants and makes their claims during the super league debacle about standing up for the good the game ring particularly hollow.

You also have the issue that while the Super League would have created a cartel of 20 or so super clubs in Europe, with the takeover of Newcastle and all that it eventually promises, currently we will more than likely end up with a situation of a top tier of 4 oil clubs and then everyone else. Oil money has already pretty much already destroyed the French League, and for all the talk of a competitive PL of the past ten league title Man City and Chelsea have won the large majority of them. The CL has so far been different but that will change eventually. In fact it already is. Of the last two CL finals, three of the finalists have been from the oiled money elite,

One of the reasons teams like Chelsea, PSG and Man City didn’t want the Super League was, that because of the money involved and the proposed salary cap, the new competition significantly evened the playing field against them, hence why they either didn’t join or were the first ones to drop out.

Agains none of this is to say that I support the creation of the Super League but ultimately the system we have right now really isn’t working for most people and institutions in the game and the Super League was a response to that. Unfortunately while people reacted against its creation, nothing has since been done to try and address the issues that caused it.

Think the real question is was the Super League even necessary for the English clubs? The Premier League is the f@ckin Super League! Currently only two of the 20 clubs in it aren't owned by a billionaire.

And the top half of the Championship.

For all intents and purposes there's no relegation anymore because the likes of Norwich and WBA can just use their "reward" money from relegation to overwhelm that league and come straight back up.

Case in point Barnsley being last season's surprise package and instantly having their manager poached by the latter.

Wasn't a fan of the idea.

I don't like no relegation and putting Spyrs and Arsenal in was a complete joke.

The Prem is where it's at, and likely where it will stay.

I know imagine putting Spurs in.

Anybody would think that we'd recently reached a cl final or had the best stadium in Europe. I mean we've only got 80 mil supporters in Asia why would that count for anything?

Stupid boy!

Exactly. Just in it because they're a Prem side and have a few quid. It was supposed to be a super league with the worlds best clubs not an interior design competition. Why not just get the Chard to create a team. Nice building and all that.

Huh?

Look at the top end of the Championship, mainly full of recent PL teams blowing the dreamer clubs out of the water due to their superior resources, mainly coming from "reward" money from going down.

There's no real pressure for the likes of Norwich, West Brom and Fulham to stay up, because worst case scenario they head back down, blow the competition out of the water and return within 1-2 years.

The irony is, we ( the PL ) now have it's own super league, made up of Newcastle, City, Chelsea, followed closely by Utd if they can keep up with the others spending.

And the FA ? .........well in typical fashion, they sit back, bury the heads in the sand and let it happen.
Maybe in 10/15 years time, they might start asking what happened to our game of football that we once oversaw ?

The FA that the clubs broke away from to form the PL and have no say in it whatsoever anymore, that FA...?

The others haven't been able to keep up with United's spending

Agree though, the PL is the super League.
