I think my point was this was a bit knee jerk.

Am I massively underestimating the levels of top level professional football by thinking that even without full training, a top player (maybe more so in defence) should still not make such poor mistakes?

Obviously the game is very different to the 90s, we know that but those guys weren’t anywhere near as fit as footballers are now and they played with proper injuries etc.

It’s probably my ignorance of the science and the levels of the modern game but it’s not like he’s been out for 9 months

I hadn’t heard about a proposed pay rise until this. I’m in complete agreement, no way does he deserve a pay rise. He’s done OK overall, some awful, some good but that doesn’t merit a pay rise at all.

I’m inclined to agree, atleast not this far away from the end of his contract, but we’ve got others like Sancho on 350k doing nothing, granted he’s new, but you wouldn’t begrudge the club captain for perhaps wanting some parity.

Well he needs to go out and earn it then. No one else would pay him more than he’s on already.

He needs to be sold, not rewarded.

What has he done that deserves the wages he is on currently.

Yes but so should the likes of Sancho, the point was that I can see why he might have requested a raise. We have a few players stealing wages at the mo.
