Manager Tiers

A lot has been made about how Ole isn’t a complete bin bag of a manager, yet for me he doesn’t have the tactical nous for this ever to be possible. To make this easier and also showcase how confident I am in our complete lack of title chances, I thought I would split managers up into three different tiers.

Definitions are below:

Tier 1 - A manager of the highest order. The big man for the big occasion, if you like. Gets the best out of his squad and is a blueprint for many to aspire to.

Tier 2 - A manager who gets his team challenging and winning, or overachieving with what he has, but still has something to prove at the top level.

Tier 3 - A manager who, contrary to his position, can’t get a team playing consistently well but can occasionally deliver a big win that keeps him in the job. Typically found managing a yo-yo club but can sometimes be found at the helm of top clubs in disarray.

If you look at our rivals, it is clear and obvious that they possess the more T1 and T2 managers. To be impartial I will assess each rival and which of their managers fit the appropriate categories below.

Chelsea:

Tuchel Tier 1

Liverpool:

Klopp Tier 1

Man City:

Pep Tier 1

Leicester:

Rodgers Tier 2

West Ham:

Moyes Tier 2

Everton:

Benitez Tier 2

Arsenal:

Arteta Tier 3

Brighton:

Potter Tier 2

Spurs:

Nuno Tier 2

Man United:

Ole Tier 3

If you look at it impartially, Ole isn’t one of the top 15 managers in the Premier League. Starting last weekend with Leicester, I feel like we have embarked a long run of humiliating results that will end Ole’s run in a position he was never qualified for.

Mourinho was undoubtedly a Tier 1 manager before yes. He won a treble with Porto. Then followed it up with what he did at Chelsea and Inter.

Was Jose really that good though or was he just bankrolled at Chelsea?

Porto, Inter?

No doubt one of the best managers of the last 20 years.

Lucky at Porto... has a freakishly good set of players already there in Carvalho, Ferreira, Deco and McCarthy. Inter were already winning titles when he took over. Also the year he won the UCL with Porto, Europe was weak. Monaco in a final ffs.

Moyes is arguably in a higher tier than Jose at present.

Don't know about that. I think I would put them both in Tier 2 right now. Guess we'll see how they do for the rest of the season.

Inter and porto were never serial winners in Europe. Plus he beat Utd on the way to the 2004 trophy. He also beat the great Barcelona side in the 2010 final.
Money's helped him but money is no guarantee of winning, especially the CL. Look at Utd, PSG, City!

Even if you thought he was lucky at Porto, he followed it up with winning back to back titles at Chelsea with some of the highest points totals the league has seen, and then went to Inter and did a treble. How many trebles had Inter won before that, or Porto for that matter?

Hate when people point solely to money. It helps but if far from guarantees success.

Exactly. Even compare Pellegrini to Pep at City or look at Ole and Lampard.
