DPL v Charlton Athletic

Perhaps Rovers being where they are in the L1 table is unexpected, but then again we have sunk to L2 since getting back to the EFL. Charlton were a PL club back then and were declining when we joined them in the Championship, but they have not been lower than L1 as far as I know since WW2, so to be where they are now is rather more unexpected than our situation.

Charlton used to have some of the best bloggers in the EFL - humorous as well as informative, but there do not seem to be many now, so what the fans think is not as easy to deduce as it has been in the past. Adkins did not go down well and the caretaker manager for the Sunderland match - the 1-0 away win - was seen as the catalyst of renewed spirit amongst the players. To imagine that the team have transformed from being unable to win at home into play-off contenders is unrealistic though. (Bear in mind too, that until this season Sunderland had a terrible home record against struggling teams.)

So to imagine then that we go into the match needing to be better than Sunderland to get anything from it, is not the right attitude. Great expectations will be upon the home team which brings more pressure than none at all, which is how they will have taken to pitch at the Stadium of Light. Obviously Rovers will have some expectations, but I see this as one of their best opportunities to secure a point or points on away territory.

Iā€™m going for a 0-2 win for the boys in blue (away kit). Hiwula/Dodoo/Anderson.

Wellens must have believed that his recruitment would provide a competitive team and he maintained his faith with men whose potential he misjudged badly.

The club surely cannot put the future of DRFC in the hands such a manager.

Absolutely terrible – how come it could be with almost the same players who played well for some of the last two games, but today were slow in thinking and playing, had no noticeable skills and made many mistakes? I thought they played worse than in the debacle at Ipswich!
I gave up after 60 minutes and thought I would waste no more time watching them and go and do something useful and exciting – I emptied our dishwasher and hand washed the wine glasses used yesterday!
The rumours were Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had three games to show why he should not be fired, and today Man U won, albeit against a very poor Spurs (Nuno Espirito Santo is the manager here that should be worrying about his future).
Maybe RW will get two more games to show something, but I think even our Board must be nearly out of patience, as well they should be.
As Donaldo said, RW must have believed in those he recruited, and we all know injuries have been a problem, but even Galbraith and Dahlberg had poor games today. Jones back in goal on Tuesday, Donaldo? – joking, of course!

Surely a defeat against Crewe should see him shown the door.

The fear I have, is the board won't sack RW because it makes them look like they were wrong appointing him, after their very long-winded way of recruiting a manager Then we just keep failing, like Chesterfield, Notts County, Southend to name a few thats gone from this league down into none league football. But it's OK, Baldwin said we're not in a relegation battle šŸ˜³

The extended highlights exhibit one team outclassing another. Rovers played like one operating at a level way below Charlton. We use words like “no idea”, “hopeless” and so forth when they may not be literally true, but yesterday they were entirely apposite. The player who probably rates himself as a class above his team mates, Bostock was notable for his errors, often so lazily incompetent as to be an asset to the opposition. All that he did was to seem to get in the way, or get out of the way, often to Charlton’s advantage. His body language suggests that he fails to recognise this.

The defence does not know where to position themselves, they either don’t challenge for the ball or just let it go by and they offer no protection to Dahlberg.

It is difficult to imagine that men who have played at a reasonable level previously - I assume - have been transformed into such a shambolic disarray by this manager and his backing team.

I may have said that a performance was embarrassing before, but I am now feeling genuinely that I do not want to be associated with them much longer if nothing is done to rid the club of Mr Wellens.

Incidentally this team do not seem to have the stomach to “battle”. Surrender is more their style.

If you are able to view the above link it's a long article but has an independent view of the game which reinforces our own views of the situation at the moment. I'm almost hoping we lose to Crewe so that the board really have no choice but to act.

Thanks Nookie; a good article from an independent blogger.

I too am getting to the stage when I feel someone needs to be punished. We have not had a word of comment from the Board and the Wellens loyalists are getting tiresome.

Thanks, Nookie; it was good to see someone neutral saying the thoughts most of us have. I also liked his comments about Train and Tube service as on my last time in England in 2016 on a family emergency I took a day trip from Doncaster to London to see my sister and was amazed at the choice of trains from Donny to Kings Cross - and that station was somewhat improved from my last visit there.

As far as the Rovers are concerned, I've tried to keep some positive thoughts, and hoped RW would get it right in the end. However Saturday's performance just about extinguished any positive thoughts.
I'll watch the Crewe game, but if they lose that, it will be difficult on a Saturday to get up to watch a 07:00 KO. Of course this Saturday the FA Cup in not on iFollow, and anyway is an even earlier KO. If they win the next two games I may watch the Papa John's game as it is lunchtime here, but if we lose at Scunny in the FA Cup, forget it.
If we win these three games, I'm sure RW will be given time with players supposed to back after that.
However, the board will probably give him time until he has all the "miracle players" back - Taylor, Okenabithie and John.
I suppose it is mostly their money.
