I'm not sure this is true at all. There have been plenty of comps where there has been no group of death referenced because simply put, there hasn't been one.

That's when no group is markedly tougher than any other, which is a rare occurrence. Sometimes there's more than one tough group and by your logic then some tourneys would have two groups of death. I've never seen a tourney with two groups of death. The toughest or tougher one is always the group of death which means that the phrase refers to the toughest group in a tourney.

After reading the comments. I think it’s safe to say Liverpool’s group was the toughest ever, in any sport. In fact anything. Less football and more like squid game. This group makes free swimming to the bottom of challenger deep look like a piece of piiisss.

Nearly all the groups in the conference league are tough for the teams playing in it. Hard to tell which teams will make it out of each group. lack of knowledge of the participants makes it tough to know which is the group of death, that doesn't mean there isn't one.

If there can't be two groups of death then that means the toughest one is always the group of death.
