DPL v Scunthorpe Utd

Won 2, Drawn 5 and Lost 8 is the record of our opponents, who I am told are struggling financially as well as on the pitch, being 24th in League 2.

Their strengths are likely to be comparatively limited even alongside ours and if they beat us it will not make the headlines as Giant-killing, since in absolute footballing terms we are rather below average height and build overall and rather underdeveloped by League 1 standards.

So we may look forward to an exhibition of struggling. To expect this team to outclass another, I think you would have to go to Tier 6, so I am at least hoping that we will show powerful endeavour and if we do we ought to have the edge.

I will say we'll get 2 goals (Rowe/Hiwula) and they will score 1.

I wish to complain that we never got the “New Manager Bounce”!

I watched Colchester (from the lower reaches of L2) outclass Sudbury last night and was quite impressed with their football. They showed more imagination and fluency than Rovers have at any time this season. It does not mean anything as far as Scunthorpe are concerned, but it reinforced my belief that we are nowhere near where we need to be to have a chance of staying in L1.

Ok, will put my optimistic head on. 2-1 to us. Dodoo / Hiwula.

Rob Staton brutally honest on Radio Sheffield…

“That’s one of the worst halves of football I’ve ever seen… and we’ve had to endure 7 extra minutes of it”

Scunthorpe United -1 Rovers 0, where minus 1 is an Own Goal and avoids giving this embarrassing team I associate myself with any real credit. I can no longer satisfy the definition of “supporter”, but I cannot disassociate myself with my almost-lifelong connection.

I thought Dickov was poor at his job, but he did not fantasise about players’ and the team’s performances. As the last manager dismissed, you could say that he deserved it less than Wellens who has dragged us to an unimaginably low level. He was undoubtedly a good player, certainly not our best of his era, and definitely not the most loyal and I honestly find it very difficult to understand why he is so popular which is the only reason I assume is why some find it impossible to forsake him. He was never tied to the club like Billy Sharp, Neil Sullivan, Brian Stock, Jimmy O’Connor, James Coppinger, Jason Price… of course I could go on. So why, why, why? Being a straight talker which is a popular northern trait is only OK if you stick to the truth.

I note that Charlton have just scored a goal to make it 4-0 against Havant and Waterlooville of National League South, the 6th level… now, who else did they beat by that score?

Let's hope the board make note of the exciting contributions made by the youth squad on Tuesday and feel Gary McSheffrey would be a great stand in for RW.

I watched the Papa John’s game and was a little encouraged by some of the play, especially by the younger lads, albeit against a poor Scunny team. Another game where we should have been well out of sight before switching off for 5 minutes at the end. Vilca missed the best chance hitting the bar on the rebound from a Rowe shot that had been well saved by their GK, and Rowe had a couple of chances that I think he would have scored during his last time at the Rovers. Several times our guys were too slow in getting shots off allowing blocks to take place.
Some comments on particular players:
Jones: made a good save in a one-on-one situation, but was badly positioned and frozen to the spot for the second goal. Also was nowhere near a shot that just missed the far post.
Blythe: looked solid for most of the game, reading the game well.
Horton: good, but must be better in not getting tricked into giving away fouls.
Hasani: confirmed the potential he showed a couple of years ago; a possible replacement for the suspended Smith, although Close may be fit?
Kuleya: showed promise early in the game and held the ball well for Vilca’s goal, but tired in the second half.
Vilca: spoilt his game by missing an excellent chance, but created the second goal by robbing the ball in midfield and putting a beautifully timed sublime pass through to Dodoo who timed his run well.
Didoo: wish he would finish like this in league games!
Nookie made an interesting, and fascinating, comment about Gary McSheffrey - does the Board have the guts?

Interesting comments.

For some time I have thought the Young player Development /Academy footballing graduates have been neglected in the club's plans. Chances have not been given and I think I even specifically advocated for Watters when he was there.

McSheffery does seem to be working hard and he and his young men deserve chances, otherwise why bother to even have them?

The one man who seems to contribute little is the set-piece/goalkeeping coach. It has been so evident for a long time that he has failed to deliver either home-made goalkeepers or good set pieces. He was no doubt the man who decided they needed to sign Lawlor and then failed to rectify his shortcomings, just as he cannot seem to teach LJ how to properly position himself. And of course he didn't seem to recognise Marosi's ability either.

(I see Moore is under attack at SW with his bland comments particularly irritating their fans)
