Big Messi fan but would have thought there were better players out there last season. Is it really down to winning the Copa? Lewandowski was an absolute machine.

He was forced to leave due to Barcelona's abject incompetence that led to them falling foul of the regulations. The tone of your post made it seem as if the FA had maneouvered to push him out.

Hi Silver. I cannot remember the exact ins and outs, but it goes something like this:

All La Liga clubs are subject to a revenue-related wage cap.

The regulations do not allow a club to register new players if they are already over their wage cap.

Barcelona and Messi agreed a new contract whereby Messi agreed to halve his wages. However, the club -who even without Messi's contract still fell foul of the wage cap - committed the unforgivable blunder of allowing the old contract to expire before the new one was signed.

Messi was therefore no longer registered as a Barcelona player, and could not even be signed/registered for free because Barcelona were already on the wrong side of their wage cap.

As stated, this was not the FA/Liga twisting the regulations to prevent Messi from playing, but their having to apply the same rule as would apply to any other club in Barcelona's situation.

Funny how people are ignoring this

Lewandowski should get it for last year, Messi was deserving of it this year for his own achievements and that with Argentina.

Lewandowski deserved last years award, Messi is fully deserving of this years.

He had twice the number of assists, was more clinical and missed 23 chances less, made over 1800 more passes, nearly 200 more dribbles completed, created 70 more chances, made more tackles, more recoveries, won more points for his teams with his goals, scored more match winning goals, had over twice the amount of motm awards, won the same amount of trophies, one being an international tournement.

But yes, Lewa was robbed...

Fully agree, they should really just give lewandowski the 2020 award. Don't see a reason why they can't, even though I know they won't.
Messi deserved it with his stats and winning the Copa.

All these people complaining would say Ronaldo was nailed on for it, if he had those stats and won euro with Portugal.
