Get Back

So, what’s the general view of the recently dropped Peter Jackson docu-series? My takes;

1. Worth the fifty year wait.
2. Can’t see what all the fuss is about the newly-restored footage. I think it looks superb.
3.Lennon was brilliant, but could give Ulcer a run for his money in the unt stakes.
4. Jesus, did we really all smoke 60 a day back then?
5. Awesome as they were, The Beatles were a bit sh*te at times. Probably during yonky time.
6. Would YOU want to play on 103 takes of that dirge All Things Must Pass?
7. Probably more, but I gotta go call the missus in England.

What’s your take?

Finished it last night. For either true aficionados and musicians, it’s superb. Can’t see more casual fans sticking with it all the way through.

The actual song get back is a great song for me , it actually has John playing lead call & response guitar parts which fits to the song great , love the drive in song too 🎵

I think there are/were rumours that a 2 hour cut will be made but I was delighted they did make it 8 hours long, didn't find it boring for a second and most Netflix doc these days are a similar length so I think there is still demand even for non Beatle heads.

Peter Jackson said in an interview that he initially handed over an 18-hour finished product, culled from over 50 hours of film and 160 hours of audio foiund in the vaults.

Disney said no (and apparently Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison agreed with them) and asked Jackson to cut it down to six hours.

I want to see the full Director’s Cut!

I’m not sure, there’s an awful lot of repetition for those not seriously interested.

That and I think what really makes it interesting (if you’re not a musician and that side of it) is when you know a bit about the context and the underlying meaning of what’s being said.

It's got pretty impressive reviews so far and friends who I know aren't that fussed about the Beatles have really enjoyed it, be interesting to see what the viewing figures are like. The only bad review I read was from Alexis Petridis who's up there with Jamie Jackson and Peter Bradshaw as worst Guardian writer.

Separate from my love of the Beatles I found it a facinating view of 4 highly gifted guys who have grown up together but now growing apart and wanting different things but still wanting to try and make something for each other. It's mad that George was only 26 at this point after everything he had already achieved.

I will fight you

You wouldn’t want to die on this hill for this version, surely? The solo album version I can understand, but not this.

If you game me the opportunity to play on 103 takes off the beatles twanging a rubber band I'd take it.

Not Maxwell's Silver Hammer though.

Most of the reviews I’ve read have judged it through the lens of enthusiasts or as a historical record, which i’d give it 5 stars for. I thought it dragged with some of the run through’s at times though. There’s songs that I absolutely adore that I don’t want to hear again for a long time now!
