Ballon d’Or

So, Mohammed didn’t win. I certainly think he deserved to be not only in the mix but also at the top. That having been said Kevin DBryne not being in the top five leaves me wondering who exactly is allowed to vote, and on what basis they make their choice.

Since 2008, it’s been a case of the Ronaldo/Messi show, year after year after year. I can only presume that it must be Christiano’s turn next year. May I be the first to congratulate him on his award.

It’s not sour grapes on my behalf, but the almost inevitable two horse race demeans the quality of other contenders. Not only Lewandowski, but other top top players, including several of our Reds should be in there.

Maybe there’s a need, especially under the present circumstances, to consider putting a limit - say, 0nce and once 0nly - that any player can win the award. Otherwise, the two horse race will become more and more meaningless.

So ballon dor is all about stats and you dont actually have to watch any football or footballer?

Got it.

Well the eye test would give it to Messi as well. So we are all agreed.

I don't see a justification for Salah to win the award really. If you look at the year as a whole, he's had a fantastic start to this season, but hasn't been anywhere near that consistency when looking at the whole year. He obviously hasn't been bad, but he hasn't been good enough when considering the records and achievements that Messi, Lewandowski and co have done in the last 12 months.

I do understand the argument that the two horse race is becoming dated now and Lewandowski should have certainly won it last year which I can't quite understand, but let's be fair, Messi and Ronaldo have been by far and away the best two players on the planet since the 2000's, so it's hardly a surprise to see them dominating the awards.

The only one close to Messi is Lewa really, I don't see a problem with any of it.

I disagree with Salah. I think last season he had more of an impact with us than at any other time in terms of his overall game and contribution during times when we were pretty poor. That won't be recognised in awards like this, and rightly so, but he has had an exceptional 12 months.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
For context, I was referring to consistency in respect to the likes of your Messi's, Ronaldo's who have won this award previously. Not to say that he personally wasn't consistent over the last year which I've alluded to in the last sentence of the top paragraph.

I know last year was cancelled but I would’ve liked that to be taken into account. But even by going of last season, Bayern overall had a better season than Barca and Lewandowski was at the heart of it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Bayern didn't have a particularly good season. They won the BL, but that's really a bare minimum nowadays considering it was their 9th in a row. Messi's production was equal to Lewa's and in addition he brought his country their first continental crown in a quarter of a century.

I'm not saying there isn't a discussion to be had, but it's absurd for people to react as if Messi had done nothing to deserve the award.

That’s what I don’t get about all this. You can guarantee 99% of the people complaining do not watch la liga or the bundesliga as well

To be fair having a religion is probably more impressive. Don’t think he played footy.

Messi winning the Copa America I think was the clincher, without that I don't think he'd of won it.

If France had of won the Euro's Kante had it in the bag this year. If Jorginho's 3rd just for being solid in the CL & Euro's winning teams - Kante's motm performances in the semis/final of the CL + a good showing in the Euro final would've been impossible to overlook.
