The "Press"

To me this a new term in football which I don't remember hearing until the last few years. Where did this come from and who coined the phrase? It seems to be popular with commentators now but it seems meaningless to me. In any ball sport you want to take the game to your opposition. Is that "The Press" or isn't it just playing the game?
Did Shankly, Busby, Kendall, Fergie use that term?

I never realised how to activate so many people's buttons, then I discovered the press.

OP. Have you never played a game of organised football? You know, with nets, refs and dugouts?

yeah I don’t understand this article

I blame the press. If the press didn't keep producing articles about the press then we would have pressed on with the much more succinct "running after the ball" as it was called in my day. I'm not impressed

Nobody has answered the question yet. I played for my school, college, pubs and town back in the day when we had real footballs and the only press was what you did with the iron when it was your (or your Mum's) turn to launder the kit. To me "The Press" was a laundry cupboard.

It's just goes to show how little some people know about football to think the press is just about closing down quickly.
