The Burden of Certainty

It was lovely to see Telles yesterday celebrating his own tackle, in the first half, most passionately. It must be very difficult for a player to feel that no matter how well he plays, he is certain to be dropped the next game in favour of another player who gets picked regardless of his performances on the pitch. Dalot, Telles, DVB and Bailly have been in this situation for the last two seasons. Yesterday, Dalot and Telles looked free of that burden. They were playing with the hope of being picked next game.

Let’s be fair here, last season Shaw was as good as any left back in the world and Telles was bang average.

Dalot was very good last night but it was arguably his best performance for United and he’s been here a while.

Bailly backs up every good performance with an erratic one or just gets injured.

VDB I agree should be given more of a chance but he’s hardly pulled up trees either.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

This truism we want to believe about Bailly is becoming exhausting. The assumption is somehow

A. Lindelof and Maguire have played 2 good games in their life ever or ever displayed any sort of form that warranted any one else to not be considered.

B. Bailly has ever been given anything close to decent run as a starter to draw any conclusions from. Ignoring the fact that playing regularly is important to things like form and fitness.

Bailly should be starting on this team. He is the best defender on it. One of Oles great mistake is this. Let's hope Ralf corrects this

How do you imagine Telles would be anything more than "bang average" and Donny manage to "pull up trees" based on very brief cameos and one off games? Would you expect any differently?

Telles is a good player, with a bit of skill in his locker and an excellent left foot. There aren't many better left backs in the PL sitting on a bench each week. Hopefully he can get a run in the team and a proper chance to impress and compete for the starting spot. Shaw's form doesn't warrant an automatic start each week at the moment, either.

If Bailly is fit, it's hard to see why he shouldn't be given an opportunity to get some games together. Varane is injured, Maguire and Lindelof are part of a porous defence and Lindelof has already been identified as unsuitable as the longer term partner to Maguire (hence signing Varane). Maguire and Lindelof have, in reality, played as many poor games as Bailly without either losing their place.

Dalot may not be a long term United player, but AWB can't play every game and has been quite inconsistent this season, and an ever-present part of a leaky defence. Like Telles, it would be much fairer to judge him off the back of a run of games where he can try to build some form and confidence.

Ditto Donny van de Beek.

Part of the reason Pep is able to rotate his personnel so frequently whilst maintaining a consistent level of performance is because everyone knows their job and the way of playing is entrenched and clear. But the other part is that by rotating, players stay sharper and more ready for when they are drafted in. Our squad management under Ole has been woeful really and players get called upon when they're lacking game sharpness, lacking confidence and haven't had time to build up any form.

Whether he gets a run or not, he’ll be back on the physio table by the end of the month.

Has still I believe played fewer games per season for United than Phil Jones.

Why give him a new contract then?

Telles has great character, he did something similar versus Chelsea, and as he took a corner he genuinely looked chuffed for the fans to be singing his name.

Whether he is good enough is a different question, but we could do with more players who share his passion for the game.

Ole's bad man management and stubbornness cost him his career and cost us much more. I hope Ralf gives all of these lads a chance, including Henderson.
