Leeds Utd v Brentford Matchday Thread

Welcome to the Matchday Thread and the visit of Pontus and his gang, I saw them against Spurs and wasn't overly impressed but teams have a nasty habit of upping their game when they come to Elland Road

Venue...Elland Road...Date...5th Dec...Kick Off...1400hrs

Team News
Leeds United
Leeds United head coach Marcelo Bielsa says it is likely that Luke Ayling and Patrick Bamford will be available to return after injury.

Defender Pascal Struijk has a hip problem but is also expected to feature.

Brentford
Brentford head coach Thomas Frank has confirmed he has no new injury worries after Thursday's defeat to Tottenham.

Mathias Jorgensen, Josh Dasilva, Tariqe Fosu, David Raya and Kristoffer Ajer remain out.

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head
This is their first meeting in the top flight since April 1947. Both sides were relegated at the end of that campaign.
Leeds have lost just one of their past 14 home league games against Brentford, a 1-0 defeat in the Championship in February 2015.
The Bees have gone 14 matches without conceding more than one goal in a game to Leeds, a run that dates back to 1961.

Leeds United
Leeds are looking to win consecutive Premier League matches for the first time this season, while they could keep three consecutive clean sheets in the top flight for the first time since August 2002.
Norwich and Wolves are the only clubs to have scored fewer league goals than the 13 by Leeds so far this season.
They have scored a 90th-minute penalty in two of their past six Premier League matches having only previously done so twice in their previous 514 Premier League games.
At 21 years and 278 days old, Illan Meslier will become the youngest goalkeeper to make 50 Premier League appearances, beating Joe Hart's record.

Brentford
Having lost just one of their first seven matches in the Premier League, Brentford have been defeated in five of their past seven.
They kept clean sheets in their opening two league matches of the season, but have managed just two in their subsequent 12 games.
Only Liverpool and Chelsea have scored more goals from set pieces this season than Brentford's seven.
They are unbeaten in their last six away league games against Yorkshire sides.

As I said not overly impressed with Brentford (Spurs not much better) and I think we might just manage a decent win here with Paddy and Bill back and our win against Palace confidence should be high..........3-1 for me Paddy, Raph and Young Dan but I'd be happy with a Paddy Hat-Trick and a clean sheet

Fair result in the end. I think the injuries ruined it for us and will take a point. Ref was poor with their time wasting and feigning injuries second half.

Firpo I think could end up being a good buy. Would love us to buy a midfielder in January but can't see it. Klich looks past his best now.

Think we need at least one in the centre of midfield.

Interesting enough im not concerned about cooper even though its a big loss, just think struijk is more than a capable understudy.

Bamford and ayling are fantastic players to have come back into the side

Isn’t Struijk injured as well?

Ayling can be a bit inconsistent - how did he look today?

Hopefully It won’t be a long-term injury with Struijk or Phillips, but Cooper’s injury looked like a hamstring which usually takes some time. We’ll have to hope young Charlie Cresswell can cope with Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal !!!!

He also headed the ball that Bamford scored from!

He played well

Ayling's not as gifted as some but his work rate is second to none. I think one of the other main qualities he brings to our team is his spirit – he's like Alioski, passionate and never-say-die. He does a decent job of punching above his weight in this division but has a tendency to get found out on a regular basis. Btw this is just my opinion so feel free to call me out if I'm being too harsh.

I think Ayling's a workhorse, but that is exactly what Bielsa needs from him.

And actually I would say that he seems to have a knack of getting passes through to people where others don't.

I'm hoping he makes a real tangible difference now he's back.

Ayling's ball retention isn't the best, but that's because, more often than not, he is trying to play us forward. The balls that he tries are harder to make as consistently, ergo he makes less of them.
