Dean Henderson to Ajax

Supposedly Ajax are keen to bring in Dean Henderson on loan for the second half of the season.

DDG's shot stopping has been great at times this season but I'd still have Henderson ahead of him in my United XI on the basis of his superior passing, willingness to be a sweeper (which will be more important under the new system) and less frailty on crosses. Henderson may prove to be worse than De Gea in saving shots on goal - the most visible facet of goalkeeping - but I think he's ahead of him in most of the others, and that leads to having fewer hero saves to make.

Anyway, I wonder if Henderson being coveted by Ajax's well respected backroom team will make some of us revise perceptions of him upward.

It'll be useful for Ten Hag to get a proper look at him so he can make an informed decision about whether he's good enough for us

Yeah, I wouldn't say I'm convinced he's good enough. The burden of proof is with him to come out and demonstrate he has the required ability and mentality (and we know from experience that it's hard to predict which talented young goalies turn into world class ones). I'd just prefer him to be first choice over De Gea.

That's a good point well made

My guess is that Ole had personality clashes with a few players, and would not choose the best players, but the players that did exactly what he asked in the manner he liked. I cannot see what Dean did to be benched. I am glad that Ole is gone now, because for all the great things he did for us - I believe that he was too stubborn and didn't manage his players well. Over-reliance on the same 8-9 players and letting good players literally rot on the bench. We should keep Henderson and play him. If we aren't going to play him - let him leave before his career is completely ruined. We did the same thing with Sergio and it was shameful. Heaton is a very good backup.

RR, yeah I can appreciate that. I’m indifferent really, and more concerned about the outfield because that’s where our biggest issues are.

Finally found the tweet with the goal keeper pie chart comparisons mentioned above. The four charts compare DDG with Ederson, Alisson, Mendy and Henderson, respectively.

BTW the links posted by Christopher above were interesting too.

It’s clever move by the club to allow the new manager to run his rule-of-thumb over the lad before next summer.

I don’t think anybody has raised this point, yet.

He’s a very good keeper. I always felt the defence looked more comfortable with Henderson. More trust that he will be quick off his line and more aggressive collecting crosses, perhaps.

Interesting info. The kind of stuff that you don't usually see. It really does highlight De Gea's shortcomings.

Elvis, I think it highlights his different attributes more than his quality per se relative to the others, e.g. I don't think we can confidently say Henderson is world class or that he's a more talented goalkeeper than De Gea, but his chart looks a lot more like the Ederson, Alisson and Mendy charts. What I think we can say is there's a good reason these teams that have been outperforming us and generally more forward looking in terms of the tactics they want to deploy have opted for keepers who possess those characteristics.
