Strongest Era in Premier League History

Are there still doubts that 2018 - Present could or is the strongest era in the history of the premier league?

I believe the standard of football currently and what is required to win a league title has never been higher. The United - Arsenal rivalry launched the premier league into the product that it is today and that can never be taken away as both sides had the finest players you will ever see in this country but Pep and Klopp have moved the bar and its higher now.

Last night we saw what is supposed to be a good Chelsea side struggle due to the pressure of keeping up. I don't expect Chelsea to go away as I think they will improve but it's really not easy to maintain a league challenge. We saw united also fall away last season and the funny thing it happened against the teams they were expected to pick easy wins from.

I can accept that Klopp has had 6 years with his team and Pep 5 so that's a huge advantage against the rest but it does seem the standards both managers have set are increasingly unachievable for the rest.

Well it would be between this era and 05-09. You've had a couple of teams getting amazing points totals but the top 4 back in those days was arguably stronger because it was the same top 4 and each was performing well in the CL. You've got to take how they do in that competition too to really judge and City have so far underperformed in the competition. We'll see what they do this season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Two winners in the last three years, four finalists in the last four years.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
04-05 to 08-09 you had a PL finalist each season, 2 winners, and 6 SF appearances from others. There have been no SF appearances from others outside of the ones you mentioned for the last 5 years.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So in an extra year there was the same amount of winners and one extra semi finalist? Let's see what happens this year but I imagine it very unlikely that this won't be beaten.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No not an extra semi finalist. I was excluding the finalists and winners from the SF appearances, so there were another 6 on top of that.

While a lot of it can be about the luck of the draw, I still think that helps emphasise that the top 4 as a collective was a little stronger back then.

Also there's been a few big gaps the last 4 seasons between the top 2, apart from the 1 season. Back in that era it was fairly tight for a few seasons. Looks like this season could be different.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry I'm not sure I understand what you're saying here. In five years there were 12 semi finalists from England?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes that's right. 12 SF appearances in total. Last 5 seasons we've had just 5.

funny to think, in 04-05 you had a great Milan team, a very good inter, strong Bayern, and even a Lyon with essien, Juninho, malouda, abidal and even a very good PSV Eindhoven led by van bommel.

05-06 - Juventus, inter, Milan, Barcelona all very strong

06-07 - the English dominated but the great Milan team prevailed

07-08 again the English dominated but united had to overcome Messi and co

08-09 strong English plus Munich and Barcelona

look around Europe today and its Munich and the English. so many falls from grace compared to back when it was at its strongest

Ah. Yes it was a great era for English teams in Europe. Will be interesting to see what happens in the fifth year, this year. I wouldn't doubt we'll see the third winner in five years and better over the coming seasons.

given how weak Europe is outside of Munich I wouldn't be surprised to see an English winner.

But it is ok for you to disrespect the City players and their dominance?

……

I don’t disrespect them. I don’t give a crap about them. It is your club I have no respect for.

Gerrard, Xabi Alonso, Keane, Scholes, Carrick, Vieira, Silva, Lampard, Ballack, Essien

—————————
De Bruyne, Kante, Henderson (if you’re having Carrick), Fabinho, Fernandinho, Bernardo Silva, Fernandes, Mahrez, Ziyech
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Doesn’t compare to the first at all. The fact you included Ziyech.

Also don’t even try saying Henderson is anywhere near as good as Carrick
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Henderson is better than Carrick was, for me.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Why are either of them getting a mention? Both mediocre in the grand scheme of things.

city won it at a canter last year

Liverpool did the same in the covid season

united in disarray and arguably at their weakest levels since Fergie retired came second last year and third the year before.

these all point to a league at never before seen levels of strength dont they ?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

No, the complete opposite. United getting second on a very low points total highlights how poor the league is.

06/07 - 3, united, Chelsea, liverpool
07/08 - 3, united, Chelsea, liverpool
08/09 - 3, united, arsenal, Chelsea

5 years, 12 semi finalists
----------------------------------------------------------------------

By far the best prem spell and with the most strength, i am amazed it is even an argument.

Given that United are the most despised club in history it would appear that a lot of people cannot respect a club that was prepared to sell tainted meat to schoolkids to prosper.
