AFCON 2022

There seems to be a lot of rubbish talks and hypocrisy about the upcoming AFCON tournament in January in Cameroon from people primarily in Europe who don't want it to go ahead.
Some of them , without any shame at all , want to use the covid excuse to make their point ... I mean really?
Where was this concern when the Euros took place across many different countries with basically full stadiums during a global pandemic in june?
The AFCON will take place in one country , on a continent where , let's face it , covid is still somewhat of a myth despite what the media want us to believe.
And in fact the tournament should be played behind closed doors from what I understand as football in Africa has been anyways for nearly two years now.

So what's the problem?

The problem is some people feel the need to minimize the importance of the biggest sporting event in Africa by far , a football tournament that means the world to hundreds of millions of people across the continent , an event that inspires so many people to dream big or , well , see their dreams crushed.
I've lived in the UK my whole life but my dad is originally from the DR Congo and in 1996 he took me to South Africa when I was a young lad to watch the Congolese side in the AFCON. It was such a wonderful experience for me , one that has always touched me deeply all these years later and I've been watching this tournament ever since.

So forgive my outrage when I hear people like Klopp and others so arrogantly dismiss this big event as a "small tournament". It might not mean much to you , Klopp, but for millions of football fans out there this is the tournament they look forward to and it means everything to them.

IT MATTERS

You've got to be an absolute whopper of the highest order to not understand what Klopp said. Seriously.

Keep playing the ACON in January and lose out on development of African players when the biggest teams choose not to sign them.

Yep, that will be the end game. Eventually the big clubs will avoid signing them, and I suspect already are to an extent.

I doubt you’d have seen many fans or managers complaining if it had been cancelled.

The only person I’ve seen showing outright support for AFCON every two years is some dumb yank poster, and let’s face it, what the feck do they know about ‘soccer’?

It’s daft. People moaning about the 3rd tier europa- I’d still rather watch that than acon. It is far too frequent.

Always makes me smile when I see “where was the…” or “people didn’t” when all it takes is a quick google search
