Yesterday meant a lot to him

Had a genuinely great game and looked better than anything we’ve seen from Maguire so far this season.
For all the stick he takes, there did used to be a very good defender in there and for someone with such enthusiasm and passion for the game like him, the past few years must have been horrible for him, regardless of still picking up a decent wedge of cash.
Don’t hold any hope of him being a regular for us, or anyone, but it would be good to see him stay clear of injury for a while and get games for someone.

Ironic that it was probably his best ever performance for the club, and yet he was at fault for the winning goal. Typical of his time at United really.
If the other ten United players had tried as hard as him on Monday it would have been a different game.

He was hardly at fault for it, wasn’t like it was a free header he just nodded to Moutinho.

Nobody within 5 yards of him or challenging is a free header in my view. He headed it straight to Moutinho on the edge of the box which was literally the worst thing he could have done, short of heading it past DDG into his own net

It was a decent performance from Jones, but far from his best game for us. Certainly nowhere near as good as his performance in CM away at Real Madrid about 10 years ago.

It is probably been harsh on the lad, but as a CB you are told to head to ball out and to the side away from the danger zone. I really hope that he can stay fit, even if he moves on. Even if he can only manage 20 games a season for a few years. I know that he has always been a bit of a figure of fun, but he is a proud bloke and I am sure that all the p!ss taking his hurt his pride. Which is likely part of the reason that he was emotional to hear the fans sing his name.

Not his fault their midfielder had the freedom of the edge of the area to collect the clearance, take a touch and a bit more time to angle his shot into the corner.

I've said it here before that I never understood the abuse some "fans" were giving him while he was out and going through a difficult period both physically and mentally.
At the end of the day , Phil Jones is a PL winner and a player who was obviously valued by Sir Alex.
He is definitely better than Maguire that's for sure.

The silver lining is he will always have his looks to fall back on.

Or more accurately, fall face first on.

People who don't play (or haven't played) the game were the types to "abuse" Phil Jones.
That being said, as dependable and as useful as he certainly is, he is not "better" than Maguire, but he is as as good as. Maguire only gets the criticism from the same ignorami as Jones did/does
And, at this level, both are better than the current alternatives.
Not sure they would work well together, central defenders in the modern era tend to work better when it is a unit such as pally/bruce, stam/berg, rio/vidic etc.
Unfortunately, we also live in an era where reputations as a central defender are built in leagues totally different (and unsuited) to the requirements of the EPL. Not suggesting those requirements are a good or bad thing, just that reality needs greater consideration.

We've invested a lot in Phil and I think he'd like to repay the club. I'd love to see him have a fantastic 2022 and make a difference. He played smarter than the reckless kid we signed 10+ years ago. I don't see why anyone who supports the club should want anything but the very best for him.

My sentiments too. And it should also be applied to all players when they wear the red shirt.
