African Cup of Nations Preview

The bi-annual African competition returns on Sunday, with Cameroon hosting. A lot of Premier League players will be representing their countries, and all the action is LIVE!!!! on Sky Sports.

Senegal are the bookies favourites, and looking at the squad it is easy to see why. Edouard Mendy in goal, Sadio Mane the star man in attack, plus experienced Kalidou Koulibaly, Idrissa Gueye and Cheik Kouyate. They are in group B with Guinea, Zimbabwe (if they aren't kicked out) and Malawi so progression shouldn't be too difficult.

Reigning champions Algeria cannot be ignored. Riyad Mahrez captains them, and is the stand-out star. However, they have a lot of quality and experience, with a host of 30+ year olds (Islam Slimani, Sofiane Feghouli, Yacine Brahimi among those).
Algeria have Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone in group E - but their main competition will be Cote d'Ivoire. The Ivorians aren't at the same level as the early 2000s, but still have a bit of class. Milan star Frank Kessie will be a key man, with the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Max Gradel, Nicolas Pepe and Maxwell Cornet looking to supply on form Seba Haller. Serge Aurier, Eric Bailley and Wily Boly could form their defence.

Hosts Cameroon won this back in 2017, but they haven't got a vintage squad. In Group A with Burkina Faso, Cape Verde and Ethiopia, they will look to veteren strikers Vincent Aboubakar and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to shoot them far into the competition.

I'm sure Liverpool fans will have one eye of the fortunes of Egypt. They are the most succesful African Cup of Nations side, but it is 5 editions since their last win in 2010. Mo Salah is the obvious star man, but it tells how much they rely on him when you see Mo Elneny is the second highest scorer in the squad! They have Guinea Bissau, Sudan and Nigeria in group D.

Much like the Ivorians, Ghana seem to be at the end of a good period. The Ayew brothers remain key components of their squad, with Thomas Partey and Jonathan Mensah remaining from the better days. Morocco are also in group C. Youssef En-Nesyri is their star man, although Achraf Hakimi may be better know. Gabon, with Pierre Emerick Aubameyang captaining (but suffering Covid) them. Comoros make up the group.

Tunisia are a fancied outsider. Manchester United and Arsenal youngsters Hannibal Mejbri and Omar Rekik are in their squad, although it is the likes of Wahbi Khazri and Naïm Sliti who will be key. Gambia and Mauritania join them in Group F, but it will be Mali who will be expected to go through in the two guaranteed spots with Tunisia.

Format
Similar to the Euros, this is a 6 group first stage, with the top 2 in each group and best 4 3rd places progressing.
Then there is a knockout stage comprising of a last 16, quarters, semi-finals and final. There is also a 3rd place play-off.

Thanks OP.

Always enjoy the ACON and wish it attracted more attention. I always find myself getting behind one of the west African teams, which I latch on to arbitrarily at the group stages.

The quality is usually rubbish. Slow tempo and focus on defence. Will watch the highlights until the Semis

I watched this tournament in person as young lad with me dad in 1996 in S.A. Got to see Romelu Lukaku's dad , Roger Lukaku ( who was utterly shyyte actually ) score the winner for the DR Congo again Liberia in George Weah's final match in international football.
Memorable few days down there watching the AFCON.
South Africa won it that year at home

Africa are taking a strong stance on Covid.

If a team has 11 players available, they have to play.
If all keepers are unavailable then an outfield player has to play in goal.
If a team cannot field 11 players then they lose 2-0.
