Newspapers

I get the New York Times for 3€ per month
The Guardian and Le Monde for free
And Die Welt in English for free.
All Android apps.

First off I'm retired, which makes a huge difference in reading time.

Second, it doesn't make me clever or intelligent, as you all know. But it does make me better informed.

I'm only posting this because if anyone has an interest in another country, through working there for example, I notice that there are plenty of English versions of foreign press on Google play. There is Iran news for example, and Russian

As many sites are paywalled, I've found it much handier following journalists on Twitter. Who will post stories via a thread without the need to subscribe to the Newspaper.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I've also started relying on Twitter as my main aggregator of news and comment. Obviously, it's awash with toxicity and misinformation but if you are selective about following people who add genuine value, it's a valuable short-cut to getting the most important content.

Slightly following on from yesterday's thread about that NYT article, I'm starting to think differently about paywalls. We've got used to accessing information for free but actually it takes time to become an authority on a subject and good, reliable reporting requires diligent research. I believe that good journalists should earn a living from their work and I also feel increasingly willing to pay for well written and researched content rather than rely on increasingly advertising-based media, which even in places like the Guardian can result in shallow content. E.g. I find the US-based magazine the New Republic quite useful in understanding the world. Views through a left-leaning lens but detached and objective about the world as it is.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's the same price as the NYT, do you think I should swap at the end of my currant subs ti NYT ?

It's just an add-on for your browser. I use Firefox so this is mine but you'll need the right one for whichever browser you use.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/bypass-paywalls-clean/

No, it won't let me add it onto chrome or firefox; it takes me to a link that says click here for android extensions which doesn't incluce it

Depends what you want it for, 52. New Republic is there to put events and trends in context. NYT is a paper of record, so it will provide a wealth of straight news reporting that you won't get in NR (or hardly anywhere else). As for it's commentary, I don't find NYT very useful because it is so self-conscious about being neutral and committed to 'balance' that it frequently (like many mainstream media organisations) feels it needs to put across both sides on any given position, which in the present era often results in maintaining a scrupulous balance between truth and lies, or science and pseudo-science.

Probably both then. I can afford it, but I am comaratively poor, so have to watch what I spend. Alas Equitable life did me no favours with my pension

The NYT is so similar to the Guardian which I suppose is why I like it. I must say I don't enjoy the Guardian as much as I used to. But I couldn't read tory papers at any price.

Here in Spain, El Pais has a dedicated English Language version on-line, and luckily, it’s free.

Other than that, I tend to just look at Sky News/BBC apps in the morning and their paper reviews, which are mainly just the front covers.

And there’s only so such much distressing and anger-inducing news I can take, these days. So i’m not too bothered drifting off into old age ignorance.

I'm not sure why it's not working, that link I sent was the one I used to get the add-on and it works fine for me? Maybe have a look round, I'm sure there are other similar add-ons.

Most titles will give an introductory offer/ free month. You could try out a few and see which ones you get along with.
