"Only Liverpool get a penalty for that"

Is Darren Ambrose right?

Now even the most ardent Liverpool fan will admit that they get the rub of the green more than any other side in world football. However, is Ambrose right when he says Liverpool as a club get decisions no other club would be given?

You could argue that Liverpool are effectively fielding two teams every week, one in red, one in black. I don't want to say they're gaining an unfair advantage, albeit cheating. I can't say they aren't though which is of concern when it comes to the integrity of the league.

I haven't seen the incident in question as of yet, however I do believe the referees got it wrong on this occasion and that no penalty should have been awarded.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Elvis has left the penalty area.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He got himself all shook up….
----------------------------------------------------------------------

……he can’t get on with VAR, with his suspicious mind.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

He just can’t help believing it wasn’t a penalty

I got no issue with Elvis to be honest. He is fine as a poster. He is just wrong on this one and it is quite funny how much he has convinced himself.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

You lot are weird. Why does it take any amount of convincing? You watch the video the first time and it is clear that he steps into the keeper. If you watch it a few more times you see Jota was looking for the peno as soon as he got through. Its really not that difficult to see. I mean, at no point did he commit to getting that shot off. Because he wanted a pen.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not even debating that he steps into the keeper. It is the reason I don't think it is a penalty. What is funny is that you cannot see that it was a perfectly natural move based on his body position and trying to keep the ball in play after he mis hit his shot. You think that because he delayed getting his shot off, probably to try and do exactly what he did against Arsenal 3 days before by lifting the all over the keeper (which is exactly what happened) you seem to think he was looking for a penalty even though he 100% could have made it far easier for himself by getting one from Ward.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

He tried to get one against Ward by stepping across him, but the contact didn't come. Even though you said he didn't step across him. He also slowed down, even though you said he didn't slow down. Are you sure you have actually seen the incident in question?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't think I ever said he didn't step across him. What I said is to get an easy pen, all he had to do was step across him and then slow down to initiate the contact. It is about as easy as it gets in terms of guaranteeing a penalty. If you're going to start lying to try and make your argument....
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, so you didn't say he didn't step across him and slow down, but your argument was that if he hadn't wanted a penalty then he would have stepped across him and slowed down? Well he did step across him and slow down, so he must have wanted the penalty the?

You're all over the place mate.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sigh. The key difference between the two is slowing down to initiate the contact. You're acting like it is weird for a forward to get their body between the defender and ball and if a player does that he wants a penalty. Don't be weird.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

No I'm not. I said earlier in the thread that a forward should get their body in between the defender and the ball. It was you that brought the stepping across the defender up, not me. I merely pointed out that he did step across Ward to counter your point. Then you said that he didn't slow down. Which he did. At this point you should probably go and watch the video I posted as not to confuse yourself anymore.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

You're true colours coming out nicely now. At least we got there in the end in terms of you being on the wum.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What are you blathering on about? There is no wumming. Just an opinion based on what is clearly visible in the video. If you don't agree then fair enough, but don't get upset because I've pointed out how daft your reasoning is.

I mean, why did you bring up that he would have stepped across Ward and slowed down if he was looking for a penalty? You thought that you were supporting your view and didn't realise that you described exactly what what Jota had done. Probably because you hadn't actually watched the video back properly.

For me, it wasn’t a penalty. It looks as if Jota missed his shot and then stepped into the keeper to get a penalty.

However:

1) Like Sterling against Denmark, only Jota can really know if he ‘played’ for this. It certainly wasn’t obvious simulation.

2) The keeper does commit, doesn’t touch the ball and does make it easy for contact with the forward to occur. If you do all these things, you’re always risking a penalty.

3) Given the above, it’s hard to call it a clear and obvious error, so VAR probably wouldn’t overrule the original decision.

I wouldn’t have given it, but I don’t think it was quite as bad a decision as has been made out.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't agree with point 2. The keeper doesn't make contact with Jota unless Jota makes that deliberate step towards him. He came out on his knees, hands out and didn't touch the ball because Jota kicked it in the wrong direction.

But you’re saying he stepped across Ward to win a penalty, but nothing in the video suggests anything of the sort. He’s getting himself between the ball and the defender, simple as that. You’re just completely fabricating the penalty narrative.
