Apologies for the somewhat tasteless timing but if you can’t do a ‘best war movies’ thread now, when can you do one?
For me…..
Platoon
Gallipoli
Bullet in the Head
Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence
Apocalypse Now
The Deer Hunter
Red Dawn (prescient today).
Black Hawk Down
Starship Troopers
Best War Movies

Some truly great noms here and although not in the same category while channel flicking last night came across the truly hilarious school footy match sequence in Ken Loaches "Kes" and possibly the late Brian Glovers finest moment as the physcho gym teacher many of us oldies will probably remember

War of the Worlds
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Which one?
The 1953 version was excellent for its time, staying more or less faithful to the novel by H.G. Wells
The Cruise version from 2005 was bloody awful
I didn't think much of the 3 part BBC adaptation
Now Jeff Wayne's musical version was brilliant!
Seen it live twice, both times in Cardiff
----------------------------------------------------------------------
See, I quite like the 2005 one.

The Thin Red Line.
Massively underrated film.

One of my favourites too. The cinematography to me is pure poetry.

prefer it to SVP (beach landing scene aside)

Re-watched The Thin Red Line.
Ok, well sure, I guess the younger me deffo wasn’t appreciating this 1st time round. I’ll put respect on it and say, I did like it this time round.
It’s still doesn’t make my list of War greats, but it certainly isn’t the complete borefest I remembered.
It’s aged very well.
Somehow I completely forgot the entire mission sequence, so that was a pleasant surprise.
Nick Nolte was fantastic.

Still need to rewatch it. I do remember Nolte being good.

Yeah, it’s visually incredible. For me, it’s also really well written and cast, and Terrence Malick just does the job you’d expect him to.
